head skimmed and more

    Hi all,
I'm getting my cams in 2 weeks and the garage that's fitting them for me said he will skim the head when he installs the cams and changes my cam belt for me just wanted to no if you could kindly give me some info on the head skimmed ie what's the benefits etc as I never got chance to speak to him as my uncle booked it for me as he is one of his mates.
Hess charging me 140.00 to change cam belt install sports cams and skim head, is this a good price.
    Thanks.

Wont you need it mapping afterwards as well, dont know why he is skimming the head... unless he is changing the headgasket for you, which he will more than likely need to do if he skimming the head

you'd normally only need to skim the head if a previous headgasket has failed and potentially caused damage to the head, so the skim ensures it's straight again. it also increases the compression very slightly which is better for performance.

£140 seems like a reasonable price for that doing, especially if it includes all parts. though none of it is particularly hard things to do they're just all time consuming. you could probably save yourself a fair chunk, maybe £90 (just pay for the head skim and new headgasket & cam oil seals) by doing the cambelt change and installing the new cam yourself, if you have access to the tools.

Seems like a very good price IMO and how mych will it be if you dont get the head smimmed at the same time? If its only say £20 or £30 cheaper without the skimmed head, then just get it for that little extra gain. alos what make is the "sports cam"

I'm going for the Kent cams fast road roller type package.
Costing £314.00 for everything Inc postage, ie cam belt, pulleys etc.

140quid is a very good price mate, rickyp charges 250 to fit cams and setup timing...

140 is sweet but skimming will lose top end speed and increse torque on a normal asperated car

out of interest would i have enough clearence if i where to have the head skimmed then put ph3's in

Yea, clearance shouldn't be an issue with oem pistons at all.

Infact, id like to get mine heavily skimmed to nock the compression up - being a tight arse and all.
