Replacing piston rings

  1. #1
Right then guys i managed to pop my rings at the weekend and have just got my new ones. Will reomve the engine tonight and stick it on the engine stand.

Is there any tips or advice that can be given on this process?

I've rebuilt a vtr bottom end before but havent tested it yet so im just a little bit nervous on doing my vts engine and killing it.

I was planning on leaving the head untouched and turning it upside down on the stand, sound like a good idea?

the way i did my rings was to leave the engine in the car take head off , then take your sump off and remove the pistons and rods this way by pushing the pistons up.

    ok thats an idea

my main concern at the moment is not getting the timing right. Can anybody shed some light on the correct procedure of timing it back up

timing should not be a problem if you have ever done a timing belt then its just the same as that. just make sure you gap the rings correctly and space them out rite.

get a haynes for timing it up

hang on will i have to rotate the engine once the sump and head is off? i suppose as long as its all in order and locked in place it wont matter

Might not need to as you are only undoing the rod bolts, the nslipping the pistons up out of the top.

One thing to be aware of is there can be a ring of soot/crap at the top of the piston bore. Might want to be careful pulling the piston out over this.

doesnt matter if you need to rotate engine with head off, lock it at TDC before you put head back on.
just undo rod bolts and take pistons out the top.

set the crank to the timing mark on the block, then lock the cam pulleys and loosen the adjusters on the cams and postion them all the way clockwise, then put the belt on apply tension to the belt and the cam pulleys should adjust to the correct location and tighted all the bolts back up on the pulleys and tesioner
