How To Guide - HID Lights

  1. #1
This is a guide on how to fit HID Lights to your car. Obviously each kit may be slightly different and different peopl do things different ways, hence the word guide. I cannot be held responsible for peoples mistakes when follwing this guide.

    you will need the following

HID Kit which will include everything you need to fit the lights
    Rachet
    13mm Socket
    10mm Socket
    Stanley Knife
    Cable ties
    Insulation tape

Id already opened my kit before deciding to make the guide so this is what was left in the box when i took the picture

    Bulbs with protective cup

First thing is to securly mount the ballasts somewhere out of the way. the passenger side one was fixed with cable ties on the right hand side of the raditator

The drivers side one was secured to the ECU tray

as you can see with the cover back on you cant tell its there

Time to get some power to the wiring now, there was an obvious red wire with mine that needed connecting to some power supply. this could be connected straight to the battery but i did mine to the fuse box the same as all my other wires. please make sure you know where the eath wire is and that its not touching anything as once you wire the red wire up there will be power running through the wires
pull the top off and undo the nut (10mm)

put your wire on to the threads and then put the nut back on

you cant over tighten this so keep going until you get bored

you now need to fix the earth wire somewhere, i choose to do it to the strut top for now but i may move it at a later date

you need a 13mm socket to get the nut off

i used this as an oportunity to change my nuts to shiney ones

i then pushed the wires down the side of the battery so they didnt get caught in any moving parts

next take out your old bulb, pull the rubber grommet off

push the metal clip to one side

seperate your bulb from the wiring and put the rubber grommet to one side you will need this later

plug the passenger side headlight plug into the one that it needs to be connected to in the wiring harness you go with your kit

    i insulated mine

the drivers side is not needed, so get some tape wrapped round it until MOT time

time to plug the wiring harness into the ballasts now. you need to make sure that you plug them in the right way round, on my kit the plugs fitted in both ways (hard to explain but you will see when fitting)

you need to make sure that the wire that goes from one side of the bay to the other is out of the way, i cable tied mine to the underneath of the slam pannel

earth the other side, there is an earth point next to the washer bottle filler neck, iirc this is a 10mm bolt

the gloves now came out and so did the bulbs

take the protective cap off once you are ready to fit the bulb to the headlight

onnce fitted pull the wires through the clip

and then through the original rubber grommet

    then refit the rubber grommet

plug the bulb into the wires from the ballast

    tidy wires away, lol

Job done, i also had some HID wannabe side lights i fitted aswell

if ive missed anything out them please PM me and i'll add it to the guide

    good guide m8

why is the drivers side not needed ?
  3. #3
the relay just needs a signal to let it know when to turn the lights so only uses one side
  4. #4
Awesome guide dude!! will be using this in the near future

Just a few questions I have part fitted mine, did you use the original clip/spring to that held the bulb in? Also I don't have a rubber grommet, but a plastic cover and the original wiring goes through part of the plastic, is it possible to purchase the grommet's separate?

yeah just use the original clip for holding the light in, it is a bit fiddly but eventually youll work out how it goes

grommit off heaghts you mean, just do it like the guide states
  25. #25
You forgot to mention that you need adjust the headlights down a bit after the new unit is installed, hids CAN NOT be run on the standard halogen setup otherwise you'll end up blinding everyone.
  26. #26
part fitted myne today it started raining, im not sure if my vts ecu is bigger than yours but i couldnt fit it where you did mark so i ended up fitting it under the ecu base plate, cant see it at all and looks really tidy
  27. #27
it fits on side of ecu, mine didnt exactly fit great, but tie wrapped it in place and put ecu cover on and you cant see it , you wouldnt even think hids existed on my car looking at the bay
  28. #28
    Ok cheers, but these gromits/covers
Mine are plastic so I was wondering do they only come on saxo's or later saxo's 106? Mine's just a black plastic cover that goes over the back of the headlights.

pretty much the same so far but not finished, where did you mount the rhs ballast? my ecu covers the whole of the ecu holder so wont fit at all! well annoying but its got more air circulation under the ecu holder so should be good. is it the ballasts that get really hot or the small black plastic box?

Can you get some rubber ones from a scrappy that will fix to the back of the light? (never seen a 106 light tbh) or you might need to modify the light covers with a rather large hole and some silicone... not too sure what else to suggest
  30. #30
Will be ballasts that get hot, the little black box is for the high beam, its just a relay

the other ballast ive mounted were mark has but is used the bracket

perfect the lhs ballast will get enough cool air where i have mounted it, not too sure by his piccys where he has mounted the rhs one... im guessing up against the inside of the radiator area... my relay hi/lo switch unit it inside the fuse box so that will be nice and dry, its been raining here so havent actually got round to getting myne working yet...

if they are good then i might get some more for the fogs and wire them up to full beam not sure yet
  32. #32
Very good guide, followed it yesterday to fit mine

    Cheers
  33. #33
is it just me or did everyone have to cut the reflector off the bulb holder part? I guess you could use the std reflector but the aftermarket one works soo much better!

Just need to find some replacement reflectors for mot time just incase i need to put the halogen bulbs back in...
  34. #34
i didnt cut anything off mine
  35. #35
What type of bulbs would i need for a mk2 saxo 52 plate.....H4?
  36. #36
Yes mate H4, group buy is finished ow though im afraid

In summary it is not permitted to convert an existing halogen headlamp unit for use with HID bulbs. The entire headlamp unit must be replaced with one designed and approved for use with HID bulbs and it must be installed in accordance with the rules stated above.

Every single insurance company in the UK has a disclosure clause. This requires every detail of your car to be disclosed to the insurer. This include any and all modifications along with whether said modification is not road legal. Failure to do so will render your policy useless and can get you in a lot of trouble. Not one insurer I talked to said they would insure a car for use on the road that was not road legal. So effectively retrofit HID bulbs render the car there fitted to as uninsurable.

not this arguement again, and according to the 'information' above... if i add a magic tree air freshner do i need to need to declare it since it didnt come as standard

    great guide mark

  50. #50
great guide, used it and went perfect!!

    Thanks!!
  51. #51
good guide and makes it very clear, but quick question, does it matter if you use the drivers side connector for the signal not the passanger side as i think the cable i have wont reach across to the passanger?
  52. #52
great guide. il be using it at the weekend to wire up mine
  53. #53
Awesome guide.. think i shall be using this guide when mine finally get sent out from the group buy

its easy mate. the only problem you can encounter is not having the right tools, but as long as you got the ones in the guide, you'll be fine.

Took me no more than 30mins to do.
  57. #57
you said until M.O.T time? does that mean h.i.d kits are m.o.t failures?

    Ryan
  58. #58
Ive done that but one side was brighter than the other.
you need to upgrade all the cabling to prevent any cooking.
im looking for the new harness/with relays as my kit was just ballast and wiring to the hids/any ides peeps?

    Epic bump - congratulations.

    But no, they're not.

Retrofitting ebay HID's in to standard reflector headlights (like on a saxo) IS illegal though.
