New clutch and service leading to complete engine overhaul...

    I've just had a new sachs clutch fitted today, so whilst the car was in the garage i had it fully serviced as the MOT is due next week. Everything was going fine until the mechanic checked the antifreeze level, which was the very last thing he did, and he found a inch deep layer of oil floating in the rad .

    This means i need a new head gasket, and he also thinks the head will need skimming because it will probably of distorted, which in turn causes the head gasket to leak/fail. Also the front disks and pads are just bout worn out and the cam belt is also up for renewal .

    So it looks like another 400 quid bill on top of the 400 quid its cost me today for a clutch, service and mot

    On the plus side i do get virtually a new engine in a 9 year car, im hoping this work will help to retain some of the cars value when i come to sell it in a year or so...

    hmm if it wasnt overheating on you, i doubt it will need skimming surly you would notice it..

    Its never overheated on me, it does run hot wen standing, so the fan kicks in pretty quick if its just parked somewhere ticking over, but its never overheated on the move.

    Yeh but it don't even mention a head gasket anywhere?

    what a bitch eh!!

    if it turns out you do need to skim the head mate its best to double up on head gaskets so your not upping the compression to much...

    I've heard you can get different thickness head gaskets is that true? Or is it just easier to double up on standard ones than go looking foe thicker ones?

    you wont need 2 head gaskets just get a repair gasket its a wee bit thicker than a normal one and is ment for the job...

    it does, i did mine with the aid of the haynes bible.
