Rules on 16v Conversions...

I know that the insurance has to be changed, but else do i need to do now?
Do i have to inform the DVLA and where do i stand come MOT time? Are the emission different from VTR's and VTS'?
  2. #2
Youre ment to change it on the vo5 mate aswell
  3. #3
You are better of telling the DVLA then the engine is right on the log book, and you tax might change, you will need an engineers report for it most probably.
  4. #4
Tax wont change due to the age of the car. It was dont by engine size up until 2002 i think.
According to the DVLA websitee, you only need to change it if you change the engine size
  5. #5
Need to change the Log book, then when the tax comes round you'll have to pay the vts' rate on tax as well. Thats about it mate

I'd send it off just so the engine numbers match up.

Whats this engineers report about? I read the DVLA site they reckon you need a receipt from the garage that did the work. Slight problem there
  8. #8
What data does the log book have?.....

Engine size (unchanged), engine number (changed). SO tell them the engine number has changed, and that should be the DVLA done.

The Tax will change, mine's a 1999 model and the tax charge changed to match that of a VTS engine
  10. #10
JPSaxo, can you tell me the previous tax charge and the new tax charge?

I was under the impression it was on engine cc?

    Cheers
    Andy

Im going back a while now... But iirc my 1.4 engine was 60quid for 6months, the vts engine is almost double!

Either way it changed, and obviously if you dont declare it you wont be covered on insurance purposes!
  12. #12
    Yer, you went from a 1.4 to a 1.6. I've gone from a 1.6 to a 1.6. Taxation comes in classes. For example from a 1.6 to 2.0 its £101.75 for 6 months.

Thought It was only me that noticed.

    V05 Is a womens shampoo.
    V5 Is a Car's registration document.

I very much doubt that the DVLA want your hair-products when you do an Engine Conversion, just the reg. document will probably do
  16. #16
thats if you tell them your doing it
always worth declaring it! complete the V5 and thats it, when the insurance comes to re-new it will state the engine number has changed on their data base i would of thought, but 1.6 to 1.6 shouldnt be any dfferent... unless they can tell its from 8v to 16v ?
  17. #17
You have to declare the engine change to your insurance straight away, if you dont and you crash you can and probably will get a short amount of time behind bars

How dows the tax work though do they send you a new tax disk which you pay for and they refund you the remianing on the old one?

I sent them the updated reg. doc's and then I didn't pay the increase in tax until my current tax run out.

I didn't get a new tax disc either.

Swanky, will get a years tax just before the conversion then
  20. #20
Is that engineers report thing a requirement?
  21. #21
I havnt done one on mine . . . . . I can imagine if you went from a 1.0 to a 5.6 v8 then you might need an engineers report. But 1.6 to a 1.6 should be fine.
  22. #22
LOL, i suppose. Though that was quite funny tbh...
  23. #23
Its only if your down sizing the size of the engine you need an engineers report. Everything you need to know is in the small print guys!

So the vtr is the same engine as the vts then? You have to send them the engine number. Your car wont be insursed without documenting exactly what you have, pretty self explanitory, whether it changes the tax rate or not - thats not the point!
  25. #25
I know that, im not even arguing that point. But the tax for a VTR and VTS pre 2002 is exactly the same, as its done on the CC of the engine.
  26. #26
So can I buy a VTS then tell them I've done a 1.4 conversion so I can pay lower tax?
  27. #27
Youll have to get an engineers inpection to proove you have
  28. #28
I knew it wouldn't be that easy.

If you did that then you crashed and the insurance company found out, you'd find yourself in a lot of trouble no doubt
