    What's so special about them?

When bolted to a valver.....what are the gains over a standard box?

I'm in the dark when it comes to transmission knowledge.

    Enlighten me

    Ta

in a nut shell better acceleration but lower top speed. think there is some charts on here that show the diff in speeds between all the diff boxes

    Always in the powerband,
    it rapes. seriously.

122mph top speed though on a standard limiter.

not ideal if you want fast 1/4 mile times (who cares about that really) as you'd have to change to 4th before crossing the line.

Get one, and put on 5th from a VTR box.

This is what I'd do (is it even possible though???)

basically, shorter ratio output... so higher in-gear acceleration.

    that would be ace,
1-4 for acceleration, 5th for mpg (never to be used on track anyways)

what about a 4 speed box

Yeah its possible. The MA box was actually a 4speed to start with, the end cap that covers 5th is just there as it was added later in life to allow room for a 5th gear

Its a piece of piss too.

Anyone fancy doing this for me for free?

great. looks as though I'll be blowing a small fortune on an s1 box then, when one comes up and I haz the £££'s.
    I'm trying to save... Thanks.

    Might be an idea that

Karl the gears are spaced the same as the vts box so the rev drops should theoretically be the same.

    Okay,
maybe i should say gets into the powerband quicker.

The FD basically increases the rate at which it accelerates in the gear, why people call it the 'short ratio' box. The rev drops as i say should theoretically be the same just the in gear performance increased massively over one of the 'longer' final drives.

I kinda wish id not sold my diffed one, although it the s2 box is prob more sensible on mine tbh lol!

nowt theoretical about it. if it's just the F/D that's different then the rpm drop will be the same.

shorter drive/ratio's means the torque multiplication across the gearbox is increased.

more torque at the wheels = more acceleration.

lolz, the S1 gearbox comments are even all over facebook

    i wantz one
