To cam or not to cam..?

Still cant make my mind up.

    + Quicker car
    + Sort out the mapping
+ Can do it at same time as cambelt
+ Cheap in group buy atm
    + Will make me smile

    - Its a car not worth too much
    - It will cost atleast 1/3rd of the cars value for a 20-30bhp increase
    - Until mapped will idle like shit
    - Costs AGAIN, including insurance rise

    Cannot make my mind up.

£270 + Parts + £80-100 labour + £300 remap = ATLEAST £670, but on the plus side the cambelt alone would be £120. So call it £500.

    Opinions?

cam it mate isoon will be cammin my westcoast
  3. #3
I want to be realistic, there is a chance I am moving to Canada at the end of the year and the costs wont be returned..

I don't just want a "do it, wikid fast" answer. Hmmm

unless ur westcoast has a S engine in whats the point? no offence

and i personally wouldnt cam it lol waste of money
  5. #5
do it, might add 1 or 2 hundred to resale value? probably not but either way it will be worth it! 500 for 20-30bhp seems like excelent value to me
  6. #6
That is what I am thinking.

    I think I want a go in a camm'd S first.
  7. #7
If you were to keep the car for a year or two i would say do it (funds permitting ofc) other than that it's a pointless expenditure for the most part

If you were planning on keeping it and having some fun I'd say go for it. But it doesn't sound like you are planning that much fun so wouldn't bother personally mate.

Not worth caming, if your going away bud!! waste of money..........
  12. #12
Best to mebbe wait and see whats happening with theCanada thing
  13. #13
Exactly.. mmm... I am too easily tempted though. I think I have to resist. Stupid group buys. I wish I was never on a car site sometimes.
  14. #14
Save your money for another 10 months. if your moving away why would you want to spend £500 on a car that you'll only have fun in for 10 months.

    Its Logical!

    Save the 'P' yO!
  15. #15
you could always buy the cams cheap, keep them untill you know what your doing, if you go away ill buy them if not you can fit them.
  16. #16
save ur oney m8 thought bwt caming my saxo n reamapping bt seems pointless unless i had a s lump
  17. #17
thats the reason i didnt cam mine. not financially viable for me to do it.
  18. #18
    CAMM!!
    Join the club!
  19. #19
Lumpy idle's are sweet, its not a bad point. Love the sound of a cammed engine unmapped.

As said though, i wouldnt spend out on it if your thinking of moving away.
  20. #20
how much will cams and map affect mpg?
  21. #21
I dont see the point asking about MPG, if you drive properly, when just cruising it could even be increased. Less power needed to get to cruising speeds.
  22. #22
just wondered really, doubt you'll gain mpg with gaining so much power
  23. #23
Its how you drive, some poeple seem to think that 40mpg out of a VTS is impossible but its very very easy. I doubt very much so with a power incrase you will lose any. You just have to drive it carefully.
  24. #24
cam it.. definately you wont regret it.. even if it is for a short time.. it will be the best time you have in a saxo
  25. #25
Id say yes mate, you only live once and youll never stop thinking about it till you do it.

On a side note, where be this group buy and is it too late to join?

you'll gain mpg if using your car through town as the power is raised and driving through town rarely increases above 3k rpm which like my cam is where the power band is.
  27. #27
theres another justification for cams then!
  28. #28
Me thinks Im gonna get in on the group buy myself now, good call on creating this thread Jorge

does the remap need to be done by specialist companies or would i be able to do it at college next year?
  30. #30
Specialist. The quality of the map will be poor on college equipment to be fair college stuff is always a bit dodge.
  31. #31
    do it............see what happen's.

    ah tis...

    £450 nug for mapping
  36. #36
Ideas of how much a camm'd VTS 52 plate, 60k, lowered, mapped etc would be worth.

    £2500 too much?
  37. #37
21 to cam 11 not to cam........im sure you will make the right decision and cam it or wait and buy an engine already cammed with an unlocked mapped ecu, i did that with my gti, i got the cammed lump for £500 then sold my old engine for £350! that works out cheaper, quicker and easier imo as my and a mate (craigb) swapped the engine over in a day
