To decat or not to decat?

  1. #1
Thinking of decatting the car today. not that I've got a cat currently anyway as literally ALL the cat insides are no more.
Is it really worth it and also will I notice a big difference in fuel consumption?
The car seems to have a bit of a lumpy idle and decelerating currently makes the car go a bit jerky sometimes, but I'm assuming this is the dodgy cat causing this?

    Any help appreciated.

    Thanks.

    Just do it you fanny!

Dont worry about mpg, the difference is minimal, but the extra responsiveness is maximal!

One of the best mods you can make imo, sounds like some sort of fuelling problem you have rather than the cat?

If you can live with slightly more noise, slightly less MPG and changing it over for the MOT, then go for it. You should feel an increase
  4. #4
lol. I'm not sure its probably the poor quality air filter not doing it any favoures either.
Yeh think I'll do it today. Wouldn't mind abit more grunt from the system
  5. #5
Yeah you will definetly feel a difference after you decat
  6. #6
    Wouldn't bother really.

Its not just the extra grunt you feel, its the fact you feel a lot more in touch with the car, whenever i put mine back on for MOT's, the car just doesn't feel like its running at its potential, its like its being tamed by something, which it is!

yea definatly get rid of the cat mate, always try and get a dodgy mot lol but on a serious note like said above it makes a big difference and the car overall just feels better to drive!

if im honest i felt little to no difference in responsiveness when i decatted my car. however it is now louder and worse on petrol which is ftl

Probably a silly question but if you do this do you have to tell the insurance people? Surely if it wouldn't pass an MOT they wouldn't pay out if you had a smash?

your 'supposed' to tell your insurance company about EVERY modification to the car mate...(except a select few companies for cosmetic mods etc)

if they wanted to be picky in the even of a claim they probably avoid paying out

Why do people say MPG is worse? I didn't find that at all - if anything, it's better on fuel than before.
  13. #13
    Just do it!!
  14. #14
going to get it done today. Westcoasty, you should pop into Rtec and see me as your only in StA
  15. #15
    you work in Rtec??
  16. #16
    sure do mate
  17. #17
I found I lost low end torque but its meatier higher up the rev range. Worth it imo as mines tripped so I dont need that torque so much low down
  18. #18
do it, i have manifold straight through and back on my vts and its definately worth it, not sure about the noise you'll as mine has no carpets or sound proofing, so its loud as hell!

What about a sports cat as a compromise.
Anyone have any experience of them?

Just a waste of money mate, Mario on here had one on his westy, cost hhim a fair bit but he failed is MOT with it

because you floor it more to hear the noise, if diving economically, there is a site somewhere that proved mpg did increase.

tbh i got rid of my decat, other than slite better sound i didnt notice any diffrence
  23. #23
    de-cat ftw
    pop bang pow
  24. #24
i would say no got this on my 53 plate vtr and dont really feel the diffo but i'v only got 8 valves

  25. #25
    Go for it
  26. #26
i did notice it felt alot sharper when you put your foot down, but the sound is quite nice, specailly when it rumbles when the revs come back down
  27. #27
mine feels a little quicker, definetly notice it but that may just be in my head. It has made a difference to the way the supersprint sounds though. Now much more raspier and poppy.
  28. #28
    im wanting to do this.
just wondering where to get one from and how much?
ive gt a mk2 vtr with mk1 exhaust setp on it with the cat underneath car
  29. #29
Well, I went for it. My system sounds superb now.
Really really pleased with it. Really pops and burbles alot especially when cold.
Will keep an eye on the mpg though. lol
  30. #30
    sounds alot better dont it
  31. #31
if you just change one part of the exhaust at once you dont really tend to notice the gains as much. if you de cat your car it will feel more responsive but when i did mine i never noticed an increase in fuel consumption or anything like that. it pulled alot better lower down the rev range though

Well, I had decated all of my other saxos bar one, but never a VTS before. But I'm impressed yes!
