just wondering where the extra 8 BHP comes from in a silvertop engine, always good to know lol, cheers
90 and 98BHP engines

#2how do you know which is 98 and 90 in the engine
-
#390bhp engine has a single plug ECU and the Cat is located under the car whereas the8bhp engine has a 3 plug ECU and has the manifold on the manifold.1 user thanked this post:

#498bhp soz
-
#5im guessing it comes from the ecu factory mapped to run slightly better?1 user thanked this post:

#6thanks was just curious
-
#7I very much doubt the extra 8bhp will be noticeable in the real world. I could be wrong, but I think the power comes from a cam change and revised inlet/ exhaust manifolds.
-
#8on the mk1 vtr's are the inlets plastic like the mk2's
-
#9its been covered many times before dude have a searchQuote:just wondering where the extra 8 BHP comes from in a silvertop engine, always good to know lol, cheers

theres a sticky with all the information, easiest way is too look at the ecu and the oil dipstick location.
you mean the cat in the downpipeQuote:90bhp engine has a single plug ECU and the Cat is located under the car whereas the8bhp engine has a 3 plug ECU and has the manifold on the manifold.
no, it was to comply with emmision regulations, hence why you pay cheaper tax on the 98bhp models, and on paper you get more mpg.Quote:im guessing it comes from the ecu factory mapped to run slightly better?
makes a difference in the real world, people used to argue that on here, driving both cars a 90bhp and a 98bhp, the 98bhp is quicker, and along side, the 98bhp always pulled away.Quote:I very much doubt the extra 8bhp will be noticeable in the real world. early mk2's which still had the single plug ecus dont have plastic throttle bodies.
all VTR's registered after march 2001 were 3plugs. -
#10mk2 vtrs are quicker than mk1s fact!
-
#12The 8bhp more makes bearly no difference, it will accelerate a little faster and probably will beat a Mk1 but its nothing liek the differences between a VTR and a VTS.
-
#13The 8bhp possibly comes from the less restrictive exhaust on the 98bhp models. Its probably not the only change but a 90bhp standard exhaust bore is tiny. You'd probably gain a few bhp on a 90bhp model just by sticking a standard 98bhp exhaust on it.

#14I wrote my 98bhp mk2 last week, picked up and drove home a 90bhp mk1 today.
I was worried after finding out i'd lost 8bhp i'd feel a but sluggish so I was looking for it all the way home, honestly I found the mk1 zippyer and more nimble-feeling.
My old mk2 was on 57k and this mk1 is on 22k though, so maybe the less miles and just coming out of a service gives it more than 8bhp over the mk2 with miles + 6-7 months after a service.
So yeah, dont worry to much about the bhp difference. -
#15wow 22k on a mk1 thats rare
-
#16sure its not 122k
some massive storage life in his car -
#18How much was that car?
-
#19It is not even an 8% difference in power between the models so I wouldn't expect much of a difference. It is not a magical 8bhp.Quote:I wrote my 98bhp mk2 last week, picked up and drove home a 90bhp mk1 today.

I think Saxos themselves can vary. I test drove an '01 VTS and it felt awful compared to my VTR. -
#20I got money back from the insurance to cover the cost of the one I wrote off so I ended up getting it for 'free'. Insurance paid 2250 for the car, service, new MOT, 2 new tyres and 6 months warrenty with the dealer.
Probably could of picked something up cheaper from a private seller, but I know next to nothing about cars and depend on it working for my job so I went the dealer route.
Going to tinker around with it a lot and maybe next time I buy one i'll know what i'm doing

#21Paper figure's show much improved performance..
Higher top end, better fuel economy, less emissions and better acceleration..The extra power comes from the revised inlet.. -
#22i have a v reg mk2 (one of the first) but it have the mk1 exhaust setup on it. is this normal??
cheers -
#23then its a 90bhp engine
-
#26X-reg, 2001 was the change over afaik.
-
#2798bhp gain a lot more torque with breathing mods than 90bhp this has been proved many times as well.
-
#28does no one read?

The official change over was 2001, where all cars registered after Mar 2001 were 98bhp.
A small amount of cars before that date had the 98bhp engines in, eg. very late 2000 - 2001 cars.
TBH i have only ever seen 1 or 2.
