Timing Belt Alignment 8 valve engine

  1. #1
    Hi

Does anyone know ... and/or can you point me in the right direction to any pics / diagrams / threads on the correct alignment for fitting a cam belt to a S reg 1.1 Saxo 8valve.

I haven't a Haynes manual for the car yet and my son is eager to give it a thrashing but not before we replace the cam belt as we don't know when the belt was last changed.

I'd also be grateful for any advice on the correct setting for the tension pulley.

    Many thanks.

I'm ok finding the locking position for the Camshaft Pulley (just right of top) and I Fink I've found a thread which answers my question about the flywheel ...

    http://www.saxperience.com/forum/sho...light=flywheel

now to find something about the tensioner pulley ... anybody got any pointers, pics, threads?

Either I've posted a very challenging thread and everyone is having a good think about it or it's so boringly obvious I should really work it out for myself?

Any advice ... however small ... would be really appreciated

I know this isn't much help but the Haynes will have your answers. Might be worth getting one... they're only a tenner or so.

What type of engine is it? (tud3 tud5 etc?)

TU1. It's an S reg so could be black top or silver top?

Just had a looksie through my haynes manual, i cannot really explain remotley what you need to do matey its far far too complicated (5 spanners outta 5 for difficulty) recommend you either get a haynes manual or go to the library, i believe all of em have the manuals and allow you to photocopy the pages you want, sorry i can't help more

Thanks guys. Haynes Manual on order £7.50 for a decent second hand one ... good suggestion about the library I'll pop along tomorrow and see if they have one. Can't see why it'll have 5 spanners ... fairly easy to strip down it's just the setting of the tensioner I'm lost on at the moment.

Having nothing better to do today I stripped the car down ready for the new belt....

    1. Remove ECU
    2. Remove the top part of the cam belt cover (2 bolts)
    3. Remove the left hand bolt securing the middle cover.
    4. Support the sump with a trolley jack and then remove the offside engine mount (5 bolts)
    5. Drop the engine down and remove the alternator belt and pulley
    6. Remove the bottom cam belt cover (2 bolts) and remove the middle cam belt cover.
Total time so far just over 30 minutes.

It's now already for the new belt and tensioner and water pump. As far as I can see there's just the one bolt (13mm) on the tensioner to release and the belt will slip off (ensuring it's at TDC and with some nice white tipex marks on the cogs as a belt and braces job).

If the Haynes manual doesn't help I'll see if the local Citroen garage has a friendly mechanic who'll help with advice on the tensioner.

    Thanks again.

Got my Hanyes Manual through the post this mornign ... nice of Postman Pat to hammer on teh door at 7:30am with it ... still gives me an early start to day.

The Haynes guide to setting the pulley is:

An approximate setting may be achieved by pivoting the tensioner pulley anti-clockwise*, using a length of 8mm square bar and spanner+, until it is just possible to twist the timing belt through 90degrees by finger and thumb, midway between the crank and camshaft sprockets. the deflection of the belt
at the mid-point between the sprockets should be approximately 6.0mm

    * I was wondering about this and would have probably tensioned it clockwise.
+ I've a load of old large allen keys so I thin I'll grind one down to a square end.

    Thanks for all your help

Yikes ... think I did better then my spelling in this thread!

The changing of the cam belt was easy ... just one bolt and the tensioner loosened up the belt could be slid off. After replacing the water pump I used a 8mm door handle rod (as suggested by Haynes) and popped it through the tensioner and then used an 8mm spanner on the rod and hung a 1.5kg weight on the end of the spanner to tension it correctly (or as near as) and tightened up the bolt. Another 30 minutes and the car was back together and purring like a cat.

All in all it took just over an hour and well worth the peace of mind with not knowing what sort of service history the car had.
