universal ones do fit
you will get little rubber sleeves that go over the gear stick and them you screw the knob onto that

I mean at the bottom, or can the gaiter just fit onto the shape at the bottom?

i brought a gaiter off e bay and just put some slits in it so the original plastic, but will put the chrome surround on later, if that answers your question

You can use a universal gaiter but it's a ball ache, I had to cut it and fold it to make it fit. Try and get an OE if possible
