DIY Catch Tank

  1. #1
If i make a diy catch tank using a coke bottle what holes do i need.

I was thinking about puting the pipe from the rocker cover into the lid, but making it so that i can still unscrew it to empty it.

do i need a hole for a breather??

also what type of piping can i use?? will any rubber piping be ok, or does it have to be heat proof stuff?

are you joking me or what? clearly you need some mcdonalds straws obviously!

im afraid im not. you can actually use coke cans. i dont get whats wrong...

Old skool lol, loads of people use bottles for catch tanks, even on some pretty hig spec cars.

Need input at the top from rocker, output for breather filter, and a drain plus at the bottom. Or just disoconnect the top and tip it all out.

cool, i'll put the input in the lid, and then i can just unscrew the lid and empty it all out.
instead of a breather filter can i take a pipe from the coke bottle back to the hole in the induction kit pipe?
what piping can be used...can i use the stuff that you use for water in pond pumps, or hose pipe? or will it melt?

please please please find me a picture of a high spec car with a coke can/bottle as i would love to see this!!!

btw you can get a proper oil catch tank off a suzuki gsx-r for £7.50 on ebay.

Just dont forget its called a BREATHER and if you seal the system you'll get a build up of pressure somewhere and possibly aload of oil all over when your dipstick blows out or your bottle blows off.

Dont plumb it back into the inlet, no need.

Get a bottle, i personally would use a can, plumb in your inlet then just cut a hole in the top of the 'bottle' and cover it with coffee filter paper. Be generous with the hole size. And use good sized tubing. As the pistons go up and down the pressure constantly changes so a good breather system reduces the ammount of pressure resistance the engine has to fight.

But gouldy is spot on, you are a being a cheap fucker .

Well any rubber hose will be ok aslong as it doesnt rest on the rocker cover or engine block.

Generally under bonnet temps rise by around 30oc.

in the second thread you have linked to, they arent breather catch tanks, they are his fuel lines because he hasnt put the inlet mani back on yet, just to stop the fuel dripping while its all apart.
i think one of the D1 spec cars used to use a redbull can.

im just going to buy one, dont wana be a cheapo. lol
  15. #15
as above that was for testing which was the flow and return fuel lines
  16. #16
yeah a few hi spec cars use cans as ther a hell of a lot lighter than a full on beafy catch tank..
  17. #17
ive seen someone (cammed 106 gti) use a red bull can as an oil catch tank. his car set on fire..........

seriously, the amount of money people put into alot of there cars on this forum, surely they can afford a proper catch tank?

as mentioned above with the pics- im sure a bottle or what ever would work fine for a couple of hours around a track but not on a daily drive or a car thats going to be used on the road? thats just asking for bother!!!

no different to the engine being full of oil, and my engines already covered in oil from the rocker down as the rocker gasket/seal needs replacing.

right do you want me to lie then and say that my mates car didnt set on fire?
deary me, i dont get people on this forum sometimes. did you not notice that i was trying to help you by giving information of past experiances with the topic we were discussing?
  22. #22
naa i believe you, obviously you wouldnt make it up.
i was just saying im suprised, cos the engine has oil in it if you get me.
surely even if that had have been an actual catch tank as supposed to a can it still would have caught fire ?? how did it happen? ..

he basically pulled up outside ricky ps unit, turned the car off, got out and walked inside. ricky spotted the smoke and ran back out side with some water or anextinguisher (it was a while ago) iirc. luckily the fire was not big and it got put out before any major damage was caused. it burnt the coil oack and some wiring bits but nothing too major. so becareful asyou dont want this happening to your car
