I have a k&n induction kit on my car. The air filter was original red but now its black from dirt. I have cleaned it and its still black and shity. Will it effect my engine if i dont buy a new air filter? or does it not matter that much? cheers for any feedback, would be good to know cuz i'd rather get smoked rear lights than a air filter, but if it needs to be bought, it needs to be bought :/
dirty air filter

#2well if it is dirty, then it is most likely clogged with dirt, which will be restricting the ammount of air that can get through it, so i would get a new one.
P.S - get an enclosed one, they are much better and dont tend to get as dirty as open filters. -
#3put it on a 30 degree wash in the washing machine
-
#6some hot soapy water and let it steep for a bit, and give it a light scrub with a dish scrubbing brush, works for me
-
#7I washed it with this oily stuff at work and then dryed it with compressed air even tho it says you shudnt :/ can any1 recomend a site for me please? the air filter is sat straight on the carb with no pipes or anything so its hard to get one that fits (with the bonet down)
-
#8that doesnt really make any sense but i am guna assume you have tried cleaning the filter when its still on the car for some reason? why would you do this?Quote:I washed it with this oily stuff at work and then dryed it with compressed air even tho it says you shudnt :/ can any1 recomend a site for me please? the air filter is sat straight on the carb with no pipes or anything so its hard to get one that fits (with the bonet down)
take it off the car before cleaning as you will no doubt break something if you dont -
#9No i took it off to clean it. And its sat directly on the carb i'll show u a pic if u wish?

#15NO NEED TO BUY A NEW ONE!!!!!
KnN filters are for life, hence why they come with a lifetime warenty from new!!
buy the KnN cleaning+oiling kit.
Sopray the cleaner on and leave for 30 mins, rinse under the hot tap and use a SOFT bristle tooth brush to remove clogged in dirt.
Repeat this process if need be, thefilter should look a dark pinky colour when fully clean.
Then leave it to dry NATURALLY!!!!!
Once it is dry spray the oil supplied in the kit onto the filter, this will giv it is bright red appearance.
It is VERY VERY VERY important that you spray the oil on, otherwise the filter will not work.
Its not the actual KnN which catches the dust etc it is the oil, so not using it means you may aswell just run with an unfilterd TB
any more advice and just drop me a PM!
Also KnN recomend you clean the air fitler with the process above every 25,000miles or sooner if need be

#16yea i used to do all that but then i realised that it made no difference at all to anything tbh so i just started putting the filter in the washer, it takes half an hour and gets all the crap out of it, easy job doneQuote:NO NEED TO BUY A NEW ONE!!!!!

#17There is a quick way and the proper way.Quote:yea i used to do all that but then i realised that it made no difference at all to anything tbh so i just started putting the filter in the washer, it takes half an hour and gets all the crap out of it, easy job done

Engine wise i allways prefer to do things the proper way lol
Just my personal preference.
Is important to put the oil on though atleast. -
#19lol wel i will continue to do it my way lol
Atleast oil it man, or all the shit is just getting into your engine anyways -
#21well obviously you wont get chunks of muck in your engine, but for example....Quote:valid point maybe, but ive not sucked anything in to an engine in all the 6 years ive had k an n type filters.
A grain of sand, you couldnt pick one out sitting on a table, so you woudlnt see it going in your engine.
abit of sand mixing with the pistons going up and down means BIG repair bills in time.
Hence why i oil up before my pistons go up and down baby
lol
