Have got a Mk2 VTR (98BHP version). What is the best induction kit??
The best induction kit??

#2imo Green enclosed, or BMC.
-
#3Depends what you want from it? If sound go for an ope filter like the piperx one but if more for power the enclosed such as bmc, piperx viper or green enclosed.
-
#4you want a normal piperx open filter extended upto the very front of the car using a single 3" alloy pipe and 2 samco 90 degree hoses. there is a space infront of your battery where the filter can sit and get more than enough cold air!
-
#5so the bit behind the head light is completely protected from all hot air is it?
-
#6green cotton enclosed induction kit, i can highly recommend it

#8no i didnt say that but you have a damn lot more than you would have if it was just stuck onto your intake as standard due to the amount of air that gets let in from the side of the rad
-
#9the green cotton enclosed filter has a big intake with the filter enclosed inside, this fits directly onto the grill and only gets cold air, the faster you go, the more cold air gets pushed into it.

#10you get all the cool stainless elbows and blue silicone tubing too
-
#11do they sound as good as an open piperx
-
#12not strictly true as the engine will only take in as much air as it needs, but they are much better than an open filterQuote:Originally Posted by bozthe faster you go, the more cold air gets pushed into it

#13how would a turbo work if cold air cant be forced into the engine?!!!!!!!Quote:Originally Posted by seanvtr81not strictly true as the engine will only take in as much air as it needs, but they are much better than an open filterQuote:Originally Posted by bozthe faster you go, the more cold air gets pushed into it

#14Itg maxogen is the most expensive and apparently gives you 10bhp on its own and is only made for the vtr
-
#15a turbo works by FORCING air into an engine thats the whole idea behind it. Without a turbo or a supercharger, a real one not one of your stupid mickey mouse ebay electric hairdrier efforts, then air cannot be compressed and forced into the engine. ANY airfilter on its own cannot force air into the engineQuote:Originally Posted by SPENCER6how would a turbo work if cold air cant be forced into the engine?!!!!!!!Quote:Originally Posted by seanvtr81not strictly true as the engine will only take in as much air as it needs, but they are much better than an open filterQuote:Originally Posted by bozthe faster you go, the more cold air gets pushed into it

#16this is mine...

the air flow meter will only let a certian amount of air in at one time so the best thing is to draw as much cold as possible like everyone knows. i have a pipercross behind the headlamp and my mate has a bmc and we both got the same bhp reading with the same mods so im assuming from that, that the engine is taking as much as it can from both to give the same reading, my mate with a k+n got just a little less bhp with he same mods....
i would advise just buying what you can afford and changing if unhappy to the other style and sell the old one. every one will tell you different opinions, just buy the one you like mate.

#17airflow meter? no such thing on a saxo
the car only sucks as much air as it needs (vacuum) this is dependant on load (throttle position ie full thorttle etc)
The car always sucks the same air no matter what filter, the only difference is the quality of the air (colder etc)
Enclosed filters (like that of the manufacturers OE airbox) work very well as they have the filter sheilded from engine bay heat and allow for a good resivoir (spelling) of air into the airbox through a front air duct.
Open filters no matter of their location are prone to getting hot when stationary and it takes a little longer to cool down. If always moving then the location plays the key part, ie in direct contact with cold air.
Enclosed is always best though, hence why EVERY manufacturer use them. -
#18i'm not arguing mate (well i am but hey), the bhp figures were taken on a rolling road i take it, where ambient temps are controllable. out on the open road (where it matters), heat soak is an issue with open filters unless you drive everywhere with a huge fan in front of your carQuote:Originally Posted by cammedvtr

. that's the one huge advantage enclosed filters have over them ie the filter is shielded from the heat emitted from the engine.

#19seanvtr81, i understand what you are saying about the fan, but were mine is placed, all it can really get during movement is cold air and it is pushed upon the filter throught the speed of the car, so some times it may be greater than the rolling road fan. yes i agree when the vehicle is at stand still there will be a lot of hot air around, but even in an enclosed filter the pipe work and carbon gets hot after a good drive from the engine because i have felt it my self which must reduce air temp in the pipe work, now with out geting a thermometor and measuring the heat at the plenium chamber before it goes into the cylinder no one will be able to prove otherwise. that my opinion on the matter anyway. i may be wrong but i havent ever seen any proof.
i understand your point people but i bet for arguments sake that if you fitted a standard saxo with an open filter and another standard saxo with an enclosed filter and raced them down the 1/4 there would be no change between the cars performance at the end of the day a filter will make hardly any difference if any, some make the cars run worse. thats my opinion anyway.
ratty, i refered to the airflow meter because that is what i was told by the garage when i had mine rolling roaded.

#20yes mate its a map sensor on a saxo

We can sort out good prices on the air filter you decide
I would recommend a BMC CDA though or theGreen Cotton one posted above!
