maybe a daft idea? Clear bonnet, what material can i use?

  1. #1
Once i got my engine etc looking clean n shiny, im thinking of putting a clear bonnet on, seen it on a car before n looks kinda neat imo.

What sort of material can i make it out of?

Or a clear bonnet with loads of holes drilled out. Possibly daft n crazy but i rekon i could pull it off lol.

Or am i hitting the Chav mentality?
  2. #2
i think that would look alright me as long as you kept your engine tidy at all times lol let us no if you do or not
  3. #3
yeye well i know it aint exactly a saxo but theyre on R8's n super cars etc

  4. #4

    Looks canny but still lol.
  7. #7
    do it !!
  8. #8
would look sweet as ..., wat about that semi transparent carbon fibre stuff ??, perhaps very expensive but looks quality
  9. #9
Fully clear wouldnt look good imo. What about tinted plastic? That might look okay. Its on supercars for a reason lol
  10. #10
    what about just plastic ?

    yeh possibly tinted.

Like i say drilled out etc and have it on aero catches so i can easily take it off n put standard bonnet back on. Thne i can use it on sundays or for show etc.

i thought that n thought it would melt. But then you have the induction kits which are in the engine bay which are made o fplastic. Needs to be strong though prefebly with no frame on it. Without a frame i guess it would just wilt sorta thing.

    What about perspecs(sp)??

I would be happy to show that engine off when it had tb's

aye i thought perspex, well thats the plastic i was thinking of, but it need to be strong enough to not need a frame so therefore strong enough to withstand the heat and not melt
  14. #14
Gives thiefs ideas too, maybe a little hole in the middle?

    JOHN READ FGS

lol! Ive said i would only use it like for a sunday drive or at night on the cruise sorta thing, or track if it sees it. So id be with the car all the time. and if its on aero catches then i could take it off in 2 mins n put standard one back on for daily drive!
  16. #16
Oh ok, i was thinking full time etc.
  17. #17
    www.killerglass.com

fil the bay up with that too

As long as you get a thermosetting plastic rather than just a thermoplastic, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermosetting_plastic , when heated it does not reform
  18. #18
wat about smoothing ur engine bay to make it look even sweater?? anything u use as a clear material is probs going to be weak so will need strengthening?!
  19. #19
saw this on a silver gti, looked noiceee tbh. not sure what plastic to use and that killer glass is...well...killer!cool idea
  20. #20
Bong pipes in your engine bay

  21. #21

  26. #26
Yeh deffo gonna look into it, i guess il just have to buy a sheet of it and cut it etc

    Will update with any news
  27. #27
Doubt you would be able to do it your self as it would have to be shaped exactly the same as a standard bonnet otherwise it would look stupid?

what about buying a spare bonnet, cut a huge hole just leaveing the front bit and side, fill the hole with a sheet of thick perspex?
  32. #32

    wouldnt it melt?
  34. #34
Is your car a mk1?? I reckon it would look good on a mk1, as it would just be one sheet, whereas on a mk2 it may look wank cause of the bend in the bonnet at the grille

man ill help you make one would be awesome!
  37. #37
    Could use clear polycarbonate?
  38. #38
wudnt it have to me E rated like headlights and windows? and i wudnt do it myself but each to there own. if i did it a wudnt do the whole bonnet maybe just the bit above the rocker cover. would be cool to see what its like though.
  39. #39
What I would do is to cut a window out of your standard bonnet. Any size and/or shape you want and then add a window.

Some clear PC sheet should do fine. But if you are adament you want a 100% clear bonnet then I'm going to assume you need some seriously deep pockets.

yer thats because yours is a 1.1 so theres more empty space than engine
  41. #41
i say do it but definatly have it tinted, would look well good at shows and things...engine looks well good

lol not much different to your engine bay as you onyl have a ickle wickle 1.4 , a VTR's engine bay has loads of room aswell

Only engine that really fills thebay is a VTS engine.
  44. #44
Will have to be strong for it to be legal, otherwise if you hit a pedestrian they will end up sitting on the rocker cover.
  45. #45
clear bonnet would look amazing, although i guess you would need some sort of engine bay neons and like a few others said, would have to be very clean a lot of the time

alternatively, get a monster of an engine printed on a fiberglass bonnet
  46. #46
Any news on this yet, im curious?
  47. #47
Sounds like a good idea + a unique one. Let us know if you do it and get some pictures up
  48. #48
I'd say, if it was going to be done, it would have to replace the whole bonnet, not fit into it to look good... just my opinion

    Has anything come of this?
  49. #49
Imo this would be far too much work to produce, also if something like polycarb was used...it scratches easily and iirc the heat would make it turn cloudy.
  50. #50
  51. #51
is that on the car full time though, or just for show purposes?
  52. #52
If its the same car which i think it might be, its on there full time. Seen it at a Motorway Junction Meet.
  53. #53
just like 2 holes cut into the bonnet, and then covered with clear acrylic would look ace
  54. #54
Holy shit :O Thats Sweeet !! looks really good
  55. #55
if you used thermoset plastic it wouldnt melt at the engine temperature

they are heated once and the shape the form is the shape they keep and they shouldnt sag or anything like that, its what the plastics in the engine bay are made of
  56. #56
any one know where that clear bonnet was made as i guessing he dint do it him self.
    really want one
  57. #57
looks flat so he could have?
  58. #58
as said id personally buy a 2nd hand bonnet, then cut out the centre, so you can keep the rigidity of the edges and the shape of the bonnet, then cut out the centre, and cut a recess, then cut the perspex to the shape required and glue it in or find an aliternative way to secure it.

use perspects or however you spell it but you would need it done propperly otherwise it could look like something gone wtong and that engine is amazing
