Hesitation problems

  1. #1
    Hi guys.

Just got hold of a '98 VTS a week ago. sweeeet car but there is a problem that is getting on my tits somewhat.

when i first got it, the car started hesitating between 1.5-and 3k, i say hesitating because thats the only way of describing it other than spluttering.

i thought not much of this but then yesterday as i was giving it some welly it starting doing it (although no where near as bad as the lower gears).

    Any ideas?

    Cheers

    Steve

maybe check the lamdba sensor, asmine did this when cold it would stick abit at 2k for about sec then go, it turned out to be my lamdba sensor.

    Thanks for reply andy.

looking around here ive seen it could be either the lambda or the coil pack, kinda hoping the first one as i think its a lot cheaper and easier to fit?

na the coil packs are cheaper on a vts,

it could be alot o different things, try pluging it in for a fualt diagnosis?

Try find someone with a 106/vts closer to ya matey and try a lil swapping session as it could be one of about 6 things, recomend replacing fuel filter 1st as they cheap

is it going to be worth taking it to the garage simply to identify the problem then fix myself?
just thinking they have all the equipment, and would only cost about 30 notes to do.

Took my 106 to a proper peugeot garage for a diagnostic jobby (uncle inlaw works there so was cheap) came up with nothing, the wonderful Mr willsy gave me a MAP sensor and has as good as sorted the issue.
If you got the spare cash i recommend a garage diag routine but if a sensor is working at that moment in time it will come up with nothing, reckon it's the ECU temp sensor myself.

Meh my headgasket went, was caused by a dodgy radiator that needed replacing and they needed to break my cam covers off as all the bolts were fucked, £550+ quid in less than 2 weeks

Pop a new fuel filter on and put a bottle of redex through it, see if that sorts it atall, cheap and a possible reaso for the problems

Lambda should 100% come up on diagnostic i think, it either works all the time, or it doesn't
  15. #15
well ill just replace that and then if dont sort it ill take to mechanic
  16. #16
Lambda is more idle issues than hesitation from what i have read
  17. #17
hmm. idle certainly is not the problem. it is however getting worse
  18. #18
not all the time, i had a diagnosis check on mine it does not always thown it up, good old citroen electrics,

but worth getting a diagnosis check, it not tht much, can get it done for about 20 quid.
  19. #19
20 quid aint gunna hurt. worth seeing if it comes up with anything else. spluttering has to be sorted out tho, cant be doing anything much good
  20. #20
well i can get done for 20 quid, but just have to go around the garages to see what there prices are.

always good way to start as you could spend more just changing sensors.

    thanks

If you do need to start playing sensor roulette it's a crap game to play

Is it ALWAYS doin it, or onyl when warm etc?
  22. #22
yup, thats the annoying thing wit motors, i was ALWAYS forking out for my pug diesel. things just always went wrong
  23. #23
well before you play sensor roulette lol, you need to get a daignosis check will narrow it down if not anything else.

then it will not cost you on sensors which might be ok.

its doing it in the first couple of thousend revs, then when it warms up its later on in the revs

My VTR was doing the exact same thing a couple of weeks ago i replaced the map sensor and coolant temp sensor and it runs spot on, if its anything like wot mine was like its most certainly either the crankshaft sensor map sensor or cts sensor,
try just disconnecting the crankshaft sensor plug and spray with some contact cleaner and reconnect it, might just have a dry joint in the connection or dirt ingress this is quite common as the sensor is located at the front of the engine..
