Lambda thread size.

  1. #1
Slightly different question to the standard lambda sleeve ones.

to save me spending £18 from GMC what thread size is the lambda sensor, and do I just need a cyclindrical piece of metal like this

    ._--.._
    |.|...|.|
    |.|...|.|
    |.|__|.|
    |____.|...|.|

That too me fucking ages. imagine its a cross section with a screw thread.
  2. #2
Meh plastic bag worked for me

Yeh like youve drawn, tubeular piece with a cap one end, and threaded inside,

Without looking probs near m18... Take it out and check.
  3. #3
Speak to williamsvts, he can make you one a lot cheaper than GMC.
  4. #4
I can make one even cheaper myself

Its already out, its just in the garage lol
  5. #5
its not a standard tap size so you wont have it in your standard tap set. im back at work on monday if you want 1 made.
  6. #6
How much.. and what size is it then
  7. #7
£8, cant remember off the top of my head.
iirc m18 special, not the standard pitch, tap it £50 is you wanna buy 1.
  8. #8
    £8 posted?
  9. #9
    13mm..
  10. #10
marc I think lady sayer is wanting one from you to btw
  11. #11
I pm'ed you a while back williamsvts asking for one but still haven't had a reply. ?
  12. #12
    jsut get some tape ?
  13. #13
    Just tape it up?
  14. #14
yer, wrap it in cling film, then some electrical tape, tuck it up out of the way with a cablke tie.

of put it in a film pot, or a pen lid or such like, then just tape it up.

sod buying anything that does such a simple job
  15. #15
that is what I was trying to get at lol. can I just sellotape some bolts together, screw it in and jobs a gooden.
  16. #16
hang on, are you trying to fill the hole in manifold, or find a place to put the secondary sensor ?
  17. #17
Place for the 2nd sensor. I didnt know if it HAD to be screwed into something.
  18. #18
The sensor burns red hot to sense the gasses doesn't it? Tape/ cling film will just melt and make a mess. Put it in a proper metal sleeve and cable tie it to the front of the gearbox.

had alot on, sister died in a car crash last week and havent been to work for a couple weeks. will be back next week.

its not a 13mm thread either.

will get some done next week.

yar, for £8 you may aswell get a proper 1 from me
  21. #21
Yeh it glows so i dont fancy wrapping it in cling film and tape.

Ill have to keep an eye out though for any smallish metal cylindrical type objects that could be used.

lol it only burns hot when its sat inside a 700 degree manifold.

it generates no heat of its own

    Quoting Wikipedia...

The sensors only work effectively when heated to approximately 800 °C (1,500 °F), so most newer lambda probes have heating elements encased in the ceramic to bring the ceramic tip up to temperature quickly when the exhaust is cold.

    point taken

but a saxo one doesn't, as i clinged mine up and it was fine.

cars have come along way in 8 years lol
  25. #25
Brad, all saxo primary lambdas have a heating element and get red hot.

As for the secondary one, i'm not so sure. If they have 4 wires then they most likely do have a heater.
  26. #26
What if you plug it in, tie it up, but leave it open? What says it has to be sealed?

Or is it best to like put some metal or some kind around it.
  27. #27
Well it'll set fire to something won't it lol

Edit: can't you put it back into the exhaust?
  28. #28
    ok fag i stand corrected.

just remove the fucking thing, i didnt have one for ages, was fine.
  29. #29
but we are talking about secondary ones here

why did a 13mm sump plug fit perfectly into the female thread where my lambda was then?
  31. #31
It is unplugged, but I want rid of my engine management light incase a real problem occurs.
  32. #32
find the impedance of the sensor, then wire a resistor with same resistance at the end, after you have cut the plug off.

or try some tape, let it tick over for a bit, and watch if its set on fire or melts off. easy.
  33. #33
or run the engine and touch it. tape might ruin it if it melts
  34. #34
this might be different with different year vts but i have no cat and both my lambdas in my exhaust and i mt car runs fine and i have no engine management light on
  35. #35
braver than me lol, but yeah its not a hard test.
  36. #36
Well, i aint gona grab it lol.

Just see if there is heat coming off it...

If I had an exhaust with a 2nd lambda space the light would be off, but its disconnected at the minute.

i very much doubt, unless after 9 years of engineering i still cant make threads or use taps properly.
a spark plug is 14mm and its bigger than a spark plug.

I'm very keen on one as well mate, if you can knock us one up... I'll collect it in about 3 weeks if that is ok? Just let me know how much you're after
