Important! : Grinding..........

  1. #1
Evening guys, need a bit of help............

I have a mk2 vts and for some reasom there seems to be a very slight grinding noise when i hold the biting point and sometimes at high revs.

Never had anything like this, i can feel it in the clutch pedal and in the acceleration pedal aswel.

Theres no loss of power, the biting point is still in the same place and gear change is fine. And car drives fine, no different from normal really. Apart from this worrying grinding noise really

    Any ideas??

    HELLLLPPPPPPPP

    Thanks Sean

doesnt sound like anything bad - could just be the clutch/gearbox rotating?
  3. #3
It feels horrible though mate honestly, i worry so much lol. Anything you can think it may be? Or anyway i can help?
  4. #4
Urm.... is hard to tell to be honest without seeing/hearing it.

From what you say it's somkthing rubbing/grinding when rotating. If so then sounds like gearbox as this rotates when the clutch is disengaged. So might be something as you just begin to rotate the gearbox as you reach the biting point?

Could pop into a garage and ask them to just 'feel' it and get their opinion - shouldn't cost you anything.

Ps. you plans sound good in your signature!

I would take a video but i think that my exhaust would over power the sound lol

Thats what i might have to do, know of any garages open on a sunday? Like Mr. clutch etc??

Shit lol i have a bit of a drive on Monday to Lyden Hill race track, luckily enough i didnt organise to go on track!
  9. #9
Bump please guys, i know it hasnt been long but need help with this one
  10. #10
Have you tried changing the transmission oil? See if theres anything in it untoward?
  11. #11
I was thinking maybe gearbox oil. I may take a look to see how much is in there if i can find out where the hell it is!!

A friend of mine mentioned slave cylinder, could that cause this problem?

    Thanks again for your help.
  12. #12
It will be your driveshaft on its way out, I'm in the same situation and it is a disgusting sound i refuse to run the car until i get a new driveshaft lol.
  13. #13
hmmm really. U got the same thing then? Its wierd, soo many different opinions. Is yours a loud grinding noise?
  14. #14
Yes mate trust me on this one, Can you feel it vibrate a fair bit?
  15. #15
yea it vibrates a fair bit, but feels more like grinding than just vibration. Its not really bad but once i put my foot on the accelerator pedal it seems to go away.
  16. #16
either a driveshaft or clutch release bearing, id go for the driveshaft first, or maybe just a c.v joint.
Grab hold of one of the shafts and see if u can rotate it without moving the wheel, a little bit of play is normal but if it feels scartchy and rough or moves more than about a 1cm then id say shaft
  17. #17
without sounding like a complete noob where abouts are the drive shafts? How easy are they to get to? If it is that how much am i looking to spend roughly?
  18. #18
Yeah i'm about 90% sure its your driveshaft, What side is it coming from? Passenger or drivers side? Driveshafts are pretty easy to fit aswell mate.
  19. #19
if it not grinding when off the clutch maybe drive shaft but if your on the clutch and coming off id say clutch release bearing if you just sit there and put your clutch in does it do it without trying to move ?
  20. #20
no if im just pushing the clutch down and not moving theres nothing atal. Its all normal. Sounds like it maybe driveshafts then? How much roughly am i looking at?
  21. #21
If you're not moving then how can it be the driveshafts? As they aren't spinning around to make the grinding sound?

If it makes the grinding noise when you hit the biting point then i would say it was the gearbox - replace the fluid and go from there?
  22. #22
Thats a good point mate, ive got a mechanic coming to take a look tonite anyways.
  23. #23
sorry misread that mate, it only happens when im moving but only moving slowly not at speed.
  24. #24
Well it must be the driveshafts if its only happening when your moving, Is it worse like when say your not accelerating? If so then it's defo driveshafts. I got a quote of £90 each delivered for a driveshaft.
  25. #25
Yea if i only realy use the clutch then its there but if i use a bit of acceleration then it dissapears, and the gearbox feels absolutly fine, changes gear fine and goes into every gear.............................................. ....
  26. #26
if it's when your moving then driveshaft looks like a favourable diagnosis
  27. #27
right guys just out in the car atm. Its there when the car is stationary and we get the biting point but not as bad as when its moving.

    What u think?
  28. #28
Right just been out in the car and it makes the noise wen we hold the biting point without driving, although its not as bad its still there.

Any other ideas guys?? Got the wheels off my car atm taking a look..............................
  29. #29
    Bumpo please guys
  30. #30
Yeah that will be your driveshaft because when your at biting point your trying to engage drive, If its clunking when easing off the throttle and then when you accelerate it fairly dissapears then its definetely driveshaft like i said from the start
  31. #31
It sort of clunks when i come out of 2nd gear and put my foot down on the accelerator. Its just sooooo wierd, sounds more drivers side than passenger side though.
  32. #32
Best bet is to get them both replaced, Any idea's on where your going to order yours from when you do? I really don't know where's best to order new driveshafts
  33. #33
Probly from euro car parts mate. Ive got a feeling that the clutch is on its way out aswel so im going to get that looked at lol
  34. #34
    just to keep u updated.

Drove the car up to BHP show today and car drove better than it has in ages. Exhaust popping alova the show etc etc.

Whatever the problem was seemed to have gone after i topped up with some oil for the journey today even though i had plently of oil anyway
  35. #35
mine did this and it was the diff on its wasy out ?

Im saying 116 for my passenger drive shaft in the morning from my local garage but ring round matey i did was around 120-160 ppl was charging me..

I got the very same problem as you...noise coming from clutch when moving but not when still....let you know 2mora is i get the same noise after my new drive shaft
  37. #37
Ok buddy cheers although it hasnt hapened scince i posted up that it was fine lol
  38. #38
I had this on the motorway from wakefield to bristol, When I had power on it was fine, as soon as i let it off it was making a grinding / whining noise... around 40-60mph anything above that with power and it was fine, slow speeds it was fine too, hasn't done it for a while though...

Just had 2 new front wheel bearings fitted to eliminate those from the problem...
  39. #39
lol random mate, it still hasnt done it on mine in ages!
  40. #40
Might top up my gearbox oil, It looks a bit stained around the join to the engine so guessing there's a leak somewhere
  41. #41
more than likly the thrust bearin it doenst go away when you put your foot down the engine noise simply becomes louder. my thrust bearing has gone 2 times in a saxo haha
im actually doin my clutch when i get home from work, cant wait
  42. #42
It went away on its own accord anyways buddy lol
