Colour Coding / Smoothing

  1. #1
As the majority of you are aware, I am wanting to go down the Euro route on the VTS.

The plans I had were to colour code all textured surfaces and then have them smoothed into the bodywork. Upon taking the car to a few garages and obtaining quotes, they were coming back with prices around £2k. The problem they could see would be as soon as they parts are smoothed, it will only take one little movement for it to crack, break away and to then have it re-done. The parts I was mostly concerned about were the wheel arches, front lower splitter and side rub strips.

So... after taking the car to a garage on Friday, they said it would be cheaper and better to buy a smooth (Euro style) kit and have it sprayed and fitted. At least that way, there are less chances of it cracking.

The situation I'm faced with is that I don't really want to go spending £2k on a kit for the car if I'm wanting to get rid of it in a year or so. So, I am now thinking just to have the car colour coded and then make some tweeks to the engine here and there.

    What do you guys think?

if your selling it in a year i dont think there will be any point spending 2k on your car

colour coding and a few little touches is the route id go

Maybe if I could have the colour coding and smoothing done for around £1k, then I may be liking it. But £2k is too much.

yeah i would just colour code it matey!

a lad that works with me has done it and i think it looks really good!!

could you take the strips off and just smooth out the holes? Not sure if it
would look good or not but just a thought.

how much have you been quoted for the colour coding damo
  7. #7
I recon smoothing does look pretty cool and its quite rare, prob coz of the problems that come with it!
Maybe just colour code the black bits and smooth in some splitters to the front and rear?

barrett... That has been discussed but I still have the problems with the wheel arches, etc...

hesslevtr... I have been quoted around £300 for colour coding.

silver_saxo... Anything 'textured' on the Saxo I want colour coded and smoothed. These 'textured' parts do not move with the bumper, etc... so when/if they are smoothed, they are prone to crack. The lower front splitter is therefore a big no no because the number of times I have ever so slightly clipped curbs when parking is phenominal (sp.).

thats what i have been quoted

Yeh i can see where yr comin from! yr car must be pretty low then, how about the rear? I suppose gettin a custom kit in the same design but smoothed would cost far too much!??

silver_saxo... I'm lowered 60mm on 15's so you could say it's quite low. Hehe!

Getting a custom smooth (Euro style) kit is the other option but again looking at prices, I would still be paying around £2k even though there are more chances of it staying on than as if I was to smooth the original VT* kit.

Smooth the vt bumpers damo like the red on in the styling section. But if your planning on selling in a year or so dont do much to it.

I got my arches blended into the bodywork nearly 2 years ago, have been using the car every day and they haven't cracked yet.
  14. #14
if the arches are done correctly they wont crack on there own they would need a decent impact to crack. If the body shop just fuck a load of filler on then its crack city.
  15. #15
But is that why they quoted me £2k? Because it will be a big job and it 'may' crack.
  16. #16
its a labour intensive job, the job itself isnt that difficult. The tinist bit of filler should be used of the fibreglass to get a smooth finish.

It "may" crack but then again its going to crack just as easily as a fibreglass body kit gettting a whack

But they do have a point if existing joints will be smooted over and are more prone to crack than as if I was to buy a new bumper, etc... that would be one composite part.
