Changing a Mk1 Clutch

  1. #1
My clutch seems to be a bit stiff and jerky and sticky when i release it. I've done a google search and found My Answear

How easy is it to replace a clutch on a saxo. Are the bolts on the gear box mega tight? and how long would it roughly take?

    Thanks

took me a few hours over a couple of days to change a gearbox. it depends where your going to do it? if you just get the car on stands its awkward as fuck getting the box on and off, but thats the hardest bit of it really. separating balljoints can be time consuming and annoying though

I'll be doing it on the drive. Or maybe at dads work. Lift the car up on a fork lift (A video would have to be published for lols)

if your doing it on the drive i found it much easier to remove the nearside strut completely as well as the powersteering pump, that way you can drop the box and slide it out through the passenger wheel arch. after that you have plenty of room to access the clutch.

just get a tall strong friend who can help you lift it into place, i was struggling underneath for ages with the box resting on my thighs trying to get it straigh, then my mates dad came down and reached through the engine bay and just picked it up and held it in place while i bolted it on

thats alot of work thats not needed, a novice can do one in a day easy without removeing the strut or PAS, once you have done a few there easy
we can do them in about 2 hours on the floor and just over an hour on a ramp

i leave the passenger strut in plates and power steering pump. remove the box after removing all required bits. drop it down and out through the wing.
to refit i stick it on a jack with a home made plate which supports the box when bolting it in

Try just changing the cable if it's stiff and jerky. Its very possible the cable is braking down inside its lining and is dry. Might save you a big job and a bit of cash?

Took about 2 and a half hours in all. Using a lift though which saves a lot of time.
