custom cages quick question...

  1. #1
does anyone on here have experience of fitting the custom cages mltipoint cage in there saxo/106??

started laying the tube out in mine the other day and everything seems great fit wise..

    BUT...

i cant seem to get the main A post legs to sit right against the screen and against the roof..

they sem to be over length.. but dont want to to commit and chop a bit off if i`m missing something..

    cheers

pm'd you, give us a ring as you have our number, different ppl fit these in different ways, but if your roof skin is fitted it has a big bearing on how you are going to fit it, as you cant get the % of weld coverage on the main hoop and roof bar, also there are different ways of doing the door bars and front triangulation, but beware, if installing the front triangulation, if you cut the legs and or fit cage in a slightly different place nothing will fit. as said give us a ring.

aye ive watched the dvd video they supply with the cage a few time now trying to get my head around what to do and i what order..

ive lready fitted a non sunroof roofskin so dont fancy changine it AGAIN!!

from what i gather i should be able to get to the tops of the tubes if i tack it all up then ratchet strap the main hoop legs together so it can drop down off the base plates..

the vid also shows them doing similar on the front triangulation pieces...

the TIG torch i use is tiny so sould only need a few inches...

it SHOULD look like this once done:

got a few family things to sort here then will give you a bell...

    cheers for the quik reply...

which cage have you got? multi point or the one in the above picture?
  5. #5
Stu should of let me know could of put u in touch via my boss with shorty from roll centre just down the road from you!
  6. #6
Fit the floor mounts in last. This will allow you to fully weld round the bars at the top

Mine was first put together like this

    just a quick update....

decided to check clearance with my seats and doorbars....

    TIGHT!!!! but they fit..

at the minute clearance for the roofbars is tight.. but i think i can drop the seats with some modded sidemounts...

the seat bars are 40mm tube so there must be another 50mm i can come down with the seat...

holesaw through the scuttle so i could link the cage to the turrets.. no dimensions were given with the cage so i scratched my head made a made mark and went for it...

also tried putting the roof bars in but no matter how i position them i think my head will catch them ( will try again tommorrow mybe put them in a V insted of an X... if not i`ll have to miss them out )

also had some cutting and shaping for the A post supports (only supplied as a bare tube)

initially i cut it as 1 single run inside the door bars but unless i used a button for a steering wheel my hands would hit it... going to the doorbar and then down pulls it over about 3 or 4 inchs and should give enough knuckle clearance...

ran out of argon but i think theres a light at the end of the tunnel...

also in consideration.. custom cages fitting price for this cage aint that bad.. i`d certainly want similar amount to do it again...

you know what i think stu.....

now with all this knowledge you can help me do mine
  10. #10
dan- ratchet straps, some blocks of wood and cableties are the key haha i took a note of where i cut the hole in the scuttle so will let ya know when your ready..
  11. #11
don't no much about cages but that "x" in the back looks lush!
  12. #12
well had a think and a play about with the bare seat sat on the seat rails..(being 6`+ headroom is minimal...)

    but...

rude not to put them in isn`t it...

also cut and shaped the dash bar but needed some help forcing the front bars apart wide enough to get the bitch in...

    i had 2 options...

either get on the steroids wait a few months and rip the sukkas apart but time was aginst me so i settled for 2nd best..

    porta-power ftw!!

    dash bar in place!

fresh bottle of gas tommorrow and good weekend push and it should be pretty much done.. thank god!!

katiescar- as you said getting round the tops of the roof bars was a bitch and ended up cutting and inch off the front legs to drop it low enough to weld round them.. i`ll fabricate a couple of tiny boxes for them to sit on once its all done....
  13. #13
looking good!! see what i meant about the seat / side mounts / door bar and roof issues! lol.
  14. #14

yeah.. being the "fat bastard" width buckets doesn`t help matters either...

the corbeau side mounts will need new holes putting in them lower down so the base of the seat is as close to the seat bars as possible but once thats done i should be ok...

worse case scenario will be cut the seat bars out and make thinner ones that mount lower down...
  16. #16
    looks awesome mate.
  17. #17
cheers for the comments folks.. and the help katiescar....

still have a BIG pile of tubes still to go in though..

X + gusets in main hoop...
X + harness bars in the rear stays

    then i need to

fabricate brackets to support the steering colomn and drill/cut/hack the std pressed item of the bulkhead

fabricate gussets for the door bars..

fabricate gussets for the A post-cage tie ins...

rather than buy them ££££ i made this:

    to do this:

    and will make my own....

Stu can i nip over and have a look one of the days?
    Tis looking good

    Does look good though!

  21. #21
    HALLELUHAH!!!!!!

still got the gussets to put in but structure-wise the bitch is done....

many thanks again to katiescar for the advice..

i feel a celebratory stella or 2 are in order!!!!!
  22. #22
bet your glad! lol, but the finished job is soooo worth it!

defiantly... once the gussets are all fab`d and welded in i can throw a coat of red oxide over everything to protect it until it goes to the blasters...

i meant to measure the angle between the doorbars to make the gussets tomorrow but was grinning so much i promptly forgot hahaha
  25. #25
lol, give your self a pat on the back!
  26. #26
    well been a while...

started dismantling the willans shoulder straps and re-wraped the around the harness bars, threaded the crutch straps in and sat the seat in position..

at this point i got niggly... i wasn`t inline with the steering wheel!! now i never was before the rebuild so why this bothered me so much i dont know.. but it did.. the problem seemed to be the fooking tunnel bulge thats here for standard seats pushing everything towards the sill

but viewed from underneath the floorpan stays fairly constant:

so there seemed only 1 logical solution.... so... erm.. remember the lovely seat bars i`d fitted??????

i wont lie.. it was a tough decision but i knew leaving that tunnel bulge in place would bug the fuck outta me everytime i drove the car so it had to be done!!

i then chopped these bits out:

and the resulting tunnel means i can get the seats and steering wheel inline and it will also look a bit tidier.. and a bit lighter...

and this folks is where i left things..

fingers crossed by next sunday it`ll have seat bars back in....
  27. #27
Your very local to me, what will you be competing in stock hatch?
  28. #28
nah... most probably the A47 challenge or the A1101 enduro mate..... i`ll leave stock hatch to maurice and terry.. (both wisbech blokes!)

chances are the car wont be applicable to many race catagories as i`m gonna be relocating the top mounts to get a bit more castor angle so it`ll be track days and maybe a bit of sprinting.. oh.. and backroad giggles...
  29. #29
gees u like working on ur car! Lol, going to be awsome, and regarding fingers, well, had more surgery last week!. Not good.

Sounds fair enough lol. Maurice was actually fitting another custom cages setup into his own saxo when i popped round last week.

Certainly looked well made, may add some more bars to my sparco cage throughout the winter.
  31. #31
what!! he`s gone back to a saxo??? damn.. he had the red C2 last time i saw him...
  32. #32
    Yep building another saxo.
750mc wont let him run AST's and as leda's fall to bits on his c2 hes going back to his roots lol

Told me he's still keeping the c2 though and will wait until they change the rules.(Very political im told)

    looks sick!
  36. #36
I am in total amazment at this, living my dream lol
  37. #37
    brilliant stuff.

Im in the same position as you with my SD cage/seating position, being 6ft 6 I want to chop out the extra metal in the area on the shell that offsets you so much..

    I wish i could weld
  38. #38
ryan yeah that bulge thats fitted for the standard seat location is a pain in the ass.. i`d learnt to ignore it before but with the doorbars so close to my knee/thigh/ribs i knew it had to be done...

as for welding?? MIG aint too hard to learn just make sure stuff is clean and practice.. TIG`s much harder but only fussy t**ts like me do it on cages etc etc...

6`-6 god damn your long ol stick aint ya!!! no chance for roof bars on yours then???

    cheers for the comments folks...

the photo build blog thing is here:

    http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v1...106/?start=all
  39. #39
no roof diagonals lol. I had to remove my OMP as I sat above it, SD sits higher to the shell so went that route. Just need some mounts to be made up as didnt get any with the cage + get it welded in and then sort out getting my rails basically on the floor.

I know what you mean about with a bucket/door bar being in your ribs. My profi SPG wouldnt fit because of the door bars and the position of seats on subframes lol
  40. #40
yeah i could never have doorbars with my old OMP cage. i think due to the custom cages main and front hoops being that much closer to the shell they give room.. but its still tight..

yes main issue with the OMP is it doesnt fit tight the the shell (well it does to the sunroof) but not far enough back into the shell is the main roll hoop, so it fouls on the sunroof, + the bars sit way to far from the shells skin.
  43. #43
    right...

i wont bore you... made a pattern.. drew round it.. cut out steel.. bendy bendy.. weldy weldy.. 3mm plates.. weldy weldy..

    BOSH

1 wrapped tunnel with seat rail plates...

also with major luck (about fuckng time i had some) i had enough tube for 4 longer seat rails..

didn`t weld them in though as i left my digilevel at work... i also have some more side mount brackety bits from the laser cutters as 1 or 2 got damaged in my rage removing the old ones...

at a guess i`d say theres a good 40mm more room either side now to pull the seats towards the centre.. in my eyes.. thats a REEEEeeeeeeesult...
  44. #44
wicked stuff dude really happy for you! I want it on mine like that

its not that hard a job tbh... getting the spotwelds off the orginal panel without screwing up the floorpan is the hardest bit..

    Looking good chap
must get over and have a look one nite!

damn right bud... been way to long...

leave it a week and i may even have these fitted...

  48. #48
the seat bars are now fully fitted.. and the tabs all welded up..

the side mounts still need moddin to drop them 40mm or so but the important bit was moving them away from the door bars..

remember the photo of my seat prssed against them?????

    how about now!!

probably a good 30mm clearance now.. and the steering wheel (or at least the bracket) appears to be inline with the seat!!!!!

also got the jigs bolted up under the turrets

(all 4 holes lined up spot on.. fuckin miracle!!) and that little hole will be where the centre drill in the holesaw locates you can also see just how much further back they will be than standard.. woop.. PROPER castor and heavy steering awaits... love it
  49. #49
looks awesome!! lookin forward to the finished product!!
  50. #50
Thats a serious cage and nicely put in, good idea about the floor pan though
  51. #51
Getting in and out of that cage won't be a problem, hahaha.

Fella, that cage really is a work of art, and the car only looks set to get better.
