A question about non standard air filters

I've checked the FAQ's and cannot find what I'm after. I want to know if an upgraded air filter (e.g. K&N) will help improve mpg if the car is driven sensibly? My hypothesis is that if engine is getting "better" air, the car will operate more efficiently by having better combustion. Therefore, operating more effectively and more fuel efficient.
    Does that make sense?

In theory yes, but not as much as de-catting.

To be fair the difference will be negligable

more air = more petrol burnt

no it wont basically more air = more fuel required to keep the ratio. also the heat soak will result in a loss of performance. (hot air entering the cylinders) so loss in performance means engine isnt work at its most eficient therfore burning more fuel

    Could mean a replacement element?

Better filtration - engine doesn't have to suck as hard?

Thanks for the replies guys. I was referring to a replacement element, not an induction kit or an exposed cone type.

My line of thinking was along Quicks last sentence.
