swapping a vts engine for another vts, is it just a straight forward swap, do i need to swap ecu or anything, cheers
swapping vts engine

#1
-
#2should be straight swap as long as its same year
-
#3if you have a unlocked ECU then a straight swap if its single to single or 3 to 3 plug
-
#4You'll just need to get your ECU Unlocked - BlueHawks Electronics do it for £70 odd + Postage IIRC.

#5surely you can just use the same ecu and loom?
-
#6i have the other ecu for the other engine, so should be straight forward then ye
-
#7if youre putting a vts engine in a vts just use the current ecu? any vts ecu works with any vts engine, but only your current ecu will work with the car unless you pay for the new engines ecu to be unlocked. cant see why you'd want to change ecu?
-
#8if u do want an unlocked ecu my mate is breaking his 106 gti and he has an unlocked ecu i was gonna have it off him with the engine but i cant afford it atm
-
#9actually if u want the whole engine then thats up for grabs i think
-
#10i got an engine, going to rebuild it, then swap it with the one in my car, so i can take the time and raise the funds, guessed it was a straight swap but best to ask u guys, cheers, lookin to building it to around 150bhp, any ideas on how to get this and prices much appreciated guys
-
#11i would be interested in the gti engine .... if still up for grabs like
-
#12i have a vtr with 120k on the clock and temps keep creeping up, i was asking on here what price to fit vts engine but few people have said it needs new ecu and wire loom ? so could anyone tell me how much new vtr engine fitted would be with say 50k on clock, someone on ebay offered me 106 gti engine and box for £300 , would this be an easy swap ? thanks.
-
#13Not too hard to swap gti engine into a vtr, as long as you get ecu, engine loom, manifold, accelerator cable from the same car. Also, you'll need all the immobiliser box, chip and pickup ring as well, unless you send the ecu to be unlocked
-
#14ill text my mate in the morning to ask him weather hes still selling the engine and like i said he has an unlocked ecu and wiring loom so there shouldnt be any probs with needing to swap chips over in the keys etc and having the pick up ring i think he was looking fro £350 for everything he only had the engine re built about 2k miles ago
-
#15Its £85 iirc, i do it posted for £65Quote:You'll just need to get your ECU Unlocked - BlueHawks Electronics do it for £70 odd + Postage IIRC.

#16for a 16v to 16v you can do any year into any year as you can simply swap the loom on the engine ad use the cars origonal ecu
no need to unlock ecu ect then
ive done this on my gti it has a 3 plug engine now runnin a single plug loom form a t reg (cars r reg) and the cars origonal ecu and the motors from a 51 plate saxo
as for the 150 bhp comment look up cams and breathing mods that should give around that figure with the right cam ect -
#17Interested in what you mean here.Quote:for a 16v to 16v you can do any year into any year as you can simply swap the loom on the engine ad use the cars origonal ecu

So say for example you have an 03 Reg (obviously 3 plug) and you have a single plug loom (like T-Reg or something) with your new engine, how does this 1 Plug loom go into the 3 plug ECU? And does it match up to the interior loom?
I've always been under the impression that the loom HAS to match both the interior loom and the ECU Plug type? -
#18????? why would you need to swap ecu's. just swap the actual blocks mate.
use all your original wiring, sensors etc, just use the new block. -
#19You take the loom as well mate and swap everything.Quote:Interested in what you mean here.

I think what Alex was meaning is that as long as teh engine/loom/ecu match, you can put them in any car. -
#20no, he means ALL engine blocks are the same, no matter what year. use your ORIGINAL sensors, loom, ecu etc and just swap the block and head over.

ok cheers mate -
#22does anyone know if the o/s driveshaft is the same size for the VTs and VTr??
-
#23yes, hubs changed in 2001 though.
-
#24so basically i can just unplug the old engine and then chuck the new engine straight in no need to change ecu or loom, straight forward plug all sensors and hoses to new engine and away we go?????
