as ive just been given one... im thinking i'll need about a grands worth of other parts? weeks of labour and a remap? can i see 200bhp without forged internals?
all i can find in FAQ's is info on 8v turbos

Need to change ecu and thats a must unless you run a 5th injector set up. 200hp can be done on standard pistons but fuel set up needs to be spot on. Also you will need to get inlet temps right down so a good i/c is needed. How much ££££ do you have

Read http://www.saxperience.com/myvtsturbo.php Simo's vts turbo blog...

i currently have no money ive spent all my spare cash on the vts conversion but dont have a problem spending £300 a month on bits for a few months till its all ready.

    sorry its a T25 not a T2
  6. #6
Its going to take a lot of months then It can be done on the cheap but that will end in costing more in the long run.
  7. #7
well i dont mind just putting bits together over a few months, will enjoy the new engine as it is for now.

What is the code on the turbo? There should be a plate on with a lot of numbers and letters on. On the compressor (the alloy side) there should also be a number cast in to it and on the turbine (iron side) there should be a number stamped in to it. What's the condition like?

You can see 200bhp on stock internals but its not recommended if your looking to do it on the cheap. Fuelling and ignition control have a massive effect on what you can and can not get away with. As does cooling of oil and water for that matter. For 200bhp to be usable and reliable its probably going to cost a fair bit more than you may expect. For this much power I would recommend a group N clutch and ATB diff for starters and that would probably blow your budget there and then after fitting unless you can get a cheap used diff. That's before you even started looking at the engine it self.

You are probably better off starting small and working your way up. This can get you started on a budget and its more likely to happen if your start small. That or save the cash before you start to do a big job. Nothing more annoying than having a car in bits only to work out its going to take you over a year to get it sorted again.

ha fuck that then, might sell the turbo and look for a nice set of cams and low power tb's for now.
dont get me wrong i know turboing costs a lot, i really wasnt expecting it to be cheap, this was more to get an idea of how much i'll get if i do it cheap and how much it would cost to get to 200bhp, i know i wont get 200bhp cheaply!

there is alot to go into it, a good manifold is £600, intercooler, piping, and bits and bobs £400, ecu and map, best part of a grand, uprated clutch £250, good diff and fitted £600, decompression plate.

will cost 2 n half grand for 200 horse, thats realistically,

if you sell it how much you want, pm me

i might just do it but aim for 160-170bhp for now. manifold is still going to cost a lot though by the look of it!

If you aim for lower psi ie: 5-6psi and wind the actuator back to this presure it could be done, I use the word 'could' very loosely and the word budget and turbo dont mix, inevitably it will end up costing a couple of K very easily.

There is a member on here ben_vts who is running a low boost vts and from the little bits of info I have picked up on it goes quite well and for now it's reliable , here's a link to his thread.

Have a search here for Gav's antics with a homebrew turbo setup also.

Hope the above is of some help.

@AXRacing, As your well informed in regards to turbo's I wonder if you could shed some light on a turbo in my posession, its a Garrett TB2531 (T25) from a Saab 900 or maybe a 9-3, would you say it suited to a low boosted VTS, aiming myself at the 5-6psi also, sure there's a .49 A/R stamped on the hotside & a .48 A/R stamped on the cold side if it helps..

    THX!

They were mostly T3s of differing variants. Some even had T4s. The late escort cossies changed from the T3s in the early ones to quite a big T25s.

Yes this is actually a nice for a old turbo. It will prefer to run a more boost than your looking at but running it lower will at least let it run nice and cool and be very safe. Just have a bit of lag but thats not a bad thing as you can just use the revs more. You will have head room for extra power if you wish so at a later date
