dent in exhaust affecting performance?

  1. #1
ok my exhaust makes this kind of throaty kind of sound even though it's got a normal ish backbox, it's quite loud as well. a few people have told me it sounds like it's got a hole somewhere but I doubt it has cuz i had it checked out by a garage and they said the exhaust hit something, also i cant see any evidence of a hole. anyway i took pictures:

could this be it? cuz it looks like the dent is all regular shaped not like dents usually look, anyway would this be restricting flow at all

    thanks

thats a factory recess in the downpipe by the looks of it

picked up my vts the other day - exhaust needs tightened up a bit - and blows a wee bit, sounds cool under full chat though, could be a simple case of that

quiet a smooth dent mabye is factory mate
  5. #5
that dent is definately from the factory...its meant to be there
  6. #6
X2. My standard manifold has exactly the same dent.

The few saxos ive seen with those down pipes have that.

They must have put it in to help with clearance under the car.

My saxo has them, there there from the factory as far as i know

There too neat to be dents caused by kurbs etc
  9. #9
they are there to give some extra clearance to speedbumps and such like, if you notice it sits almost flush with the base of the sump

ye deff ment to be there from factory although mine does have an extra dent on it. could this really make much performance effect ?
  11. #11
yeah it did look a bit too neat looking to be a dent just making sure

and to the person above yeah it might do but it depends whereabouts it is... closer to the engine the dent is means more chance that its restrictive but it also matters on the size of it so best post a pic. if the dent is on a part where the pipe bends again this is bad because these areas are usually the bottlenecks anyway
  12. #12
nah i believe its just after the manafacurer indent as it was lifted with forklift at scrapyard. so guess it should be ok
  13. #13
That dent is probably deliberate and is used by a jig or fixture used in the manufacturing process. Anyway, it's the factory silencers that cause the most restriction normally.
