depends what you mean by full re-spray?
full outside of car or outside and inside door shuts and engine bay?

It also depends on the type and colour of paint you use aswell as some give better coverage than others.

My painters typicly use for a full respray (outside and in door shuts and engine bay-
3-4 litres of paint for a small car
    around 2 litres of primer
around 2-3litres of laquer depending on finish wanted.

for plastic parts there is obviously plastic primer and also filler primer for use on filler repairs.

to get a good finish you would be best using 2k paint or water based. Also cheap paints are normally cheap for a reason, for a good job get quality stuff

ok cheers matey for that, yes inside the door shuts will be done and what i can get of the slam panel and engine bay which im not so worried about the quality, its a mg gloss glacier white that i want cars a gloss red so a total colour change, where do you recommend looking for paint? got hold of a decent unit apparently ideal for spraying and my friend who sprays jcbs for a living reakens he can do a good job this would be the 1st car hes done so hes nervous but reakens everything should go to plan and im daring.

i did fancy renault liquid gold which is like a metalice pearly colour as you know, he said he can do that but we agreed on a gloss to make things less awkward for him.

    cheers for your info mate

i did a bit of experience at a bodyshop and was shit hot at masking up so thats not a problem and ill help prep the car along with about 4 of us over a weekend of more, would you say to rub down right through to bare metal being as its a new colour???

    Hi mate,
Shouldnt really matter what colour you go for as all paint is the same to put on. I mix all my own colours but if i were you id be looking at expresspaints.co.uk,paints4u.com. I use standox paint mainly and i swear by it.

The finish is all in the prep work, personally i wouldnt sand it to bare metal unless it was a show car or you were restoring it etc.
You can do a full colour change by just 'scotch brite'ing' the whole car down (like a brilo pad that takes the top layer of paint off) or sand the whole car down wth 300grit sandpaper, just remember if you are doing any filler repairs to filler primer them and sand the filler primer down before you start to paint it (also its best to leave the primer over night if painting over filler as the filler absorbs it and you will see all the filler repairs through the paint).
Make sure you clean it all well before you start painting, i use panel wipe but you can use thinners.
If you want a mint glass like finish, get a good few coats of laquer on then when its dried sand the whole car down with 2000wet and dry (wet) just until the paint work goes dull, then machine polish with Farecla G3 or 3M cutting compound and it will take any imperfections from the laquer and give a tottaly smooth finish to the paint and when polished up gives a glass like finish
