    right lets get this straight....
Is it or is it not legal to have your front windows tinted? not the windscreen the windows?
I want it done but the tinting guy wont do it...
should i do it myself or who will do it?
  2. #2
its legal to a certain point mate. can't remember the exact percentage off the top of my head but someone on here will know.

i'm guessing the guy is refusing to do it incase someone is pulled over by the police and pointed in his direction. give another garage a call, plenty of people have them and have not been pulled over for it, all down to personal choice whether you want to take the risk
  3. #3
I think its ok aslong as the window lets in 70% of the light.
  4. #4
so they'd class that as 30% tint then mate - is he refusing to put any tint on it at all ???
  5. #5
    speak to devildamo

hes got a number for a place down outh that will do it
  6. #6
when i got pulled over by traffic police he told me that the windows should let in 75% of light.
and to be onnest mate 25% tint is pretty much crap! and you cant really notice it on the window at all!!

Anything infront of the B pillar is illegal except 30% or below, i.e all front windows

30% tints are barely different to standard windows and would be a complete waste of time.

If the police arent bad around your way - go to a diff garage.

But up here theres a large police presence, which is stopping me doing my fronts
  8. #8
as of Jan2004, any tinting forward of the b-pillar is illegal. tinting laws
  9. #9
even if you have tints foward of the B pillar, done before the law was enforced, removal can be emposed by a police officer!!

negigence of the law is no excuse...

do the likes of BMW etc not sell tints as an added extra to the likes of the x5?

  11. #11
certainly do, same with the mini cooper S. don't know how they get round it.
  12. #12
its bcoz the car is sold as standard! they have to meet strict conditions so the car is legal... so there tints will mee the law requirments....
  13. #13
a family friend has a big 4x4 lexus, he got limo style tints all round and had the windscreen slightly done, nothing even happens to him, i alot of older people with tinted windows and nothing happens

i know young people who get pulled for having slight tints and get a fine and them ripped out

ive rang up tint shops before and some will not touch the front windows, some say they will do them, but its illegal, think you have to say its a show car and sign somethin for them to do it

its your choice whether you can get it done or not
  14. #14
they cannot meet the law if the law says only 30% at front as the bmw sells aot darker ones that that with new cars
  15. #15
Its 30% tint on ur front windows and as black as u like on the back but ur not allowed to touch ur windscreen!
  16. #16
yes we know that if you read the rest of the posts BUT what i'm debating is how come BMW etc get away with tinting the front more that 30% and like yate5y said i too have also seen BMW's with a light window tint!

read the other posts, as of Jan2004 it's illegal to tint forward of the B-pillar.
as for the minis and bmw, they must come out of the factory with bang-on 30% tint on the fronts at a guess. other than that i really don't know.
  18. #18
i can tell you now that they come with more than 30% as i had 30% on my old scooby and my mate's dad had an x5 and was alot darker on the x5
  19. #19
like i said, it was a guess.

If your old and posh you pose a danger to the road(shite drivers)...if your young and love your car too much then its obvious your gunna smash it up? hmmmmmm
Dont really wanna pay for tints and then lose em...

I can see what everyone is saying about tints & the legalality (sp), but at the end of the day its down to the strictness of the police in your area.

I could drive around all day & all night around here with dark tints on the front side windows & not get pulled, where as you could drive around with very light tints on the front side windows & get pulled.

Iam taking a big risk, but not many people do, if you see cars around town with tints on the front side windows then why not try it, but if you dont see any then the risk isnt worth taking.

    breakdown of thread:

    - Windscreen cannot be touched
    - front side windows must have 70% visability
    - all back windows can be totally blacked out

If the tints were added before Jan 04 then they wont take harsh action BUT can ask you to get the tints removed, within 10 days.
This is then checked by a police officer.

If the Front tints are below 70% visability and work was done after Jan 04, thats illegal.

My advice is have the tints done if you feel you wont get pulled alot for it, and if caught say it was done in 2003 (unless you have a newer car, which would make you look stupid)

And get proper tints, not DIY peel off in a week Tints.

i dont if its just cos im lucky but i have all my windows tinted limo black! have never been pulled over for them!!

but 30% is wat your supposed to have legally on front windows!
  24. #24
mines just 40% all round i dint want the light dark split but you cant really tell its not that dark
