i got bit of a problem with banging noise coming from my front end ive had it to the garage who said my drop links anti roll bars etc all look new so couldnt be these, my mechanic said my problem was my roll bars are knockin on the chassis so he put some spacers in there too give them a bit more room it made it better to begin with but went on a big drive yesterday and its still doing it goin over bumps and occasionally when you turn from standing still. the car has been lowered not sure by how much but it looks really low. the noise sounds louder now and it feels like something is loose or baggy dont feel tight like it should its a mk1 vts with 89k and ideas pls? thanks adam
Important! : banging noise from front end

#2also dunno if it helps but seems to be comin from passenger side
-
#3Have you checked the bottem arms??
-
#4Siezed top mount?
-
#5i reckon it'll be a loose damper retaining nut - should be fairly easy to diagnose it with the car jacked up and wheel off.
-
#6my mechanic checked everything under the car checked suspension and all that he says to get round the problem i need it back on standard springs but i been in other vts's lowered that ride smooth just bit bumpy no banging, the banging seems to come thru steering wheel and feels like theres movement in something, all the mounts where checked there was no probs with these either
-
#7where abouts would i find the damper retaining nut?
-
#8inbetween the strut and the damper shaft. It'll be inside the spring when you lift the dust cover.
-
#9cheers mate just jacked it up gonna have a look just checked wishbones and struts which are all good if cant find anything wrong gonna try it on standard springs
-
#10well you should be able to move the strut around, there should be a play in it. Grab the disc at 9 and 3 o clock and try to wobble it.
You should be able to track where the play is - this will be causing your knock. -
#11i shook the brake and suspension arm but no play rechecked struts which are good there was movement on them but got a mechanic here who said its fine, discs were solid the strut tops etc are all tight no play on wish bones either, i showed the mechanic were the anti roll bars are close to the chassis and he recomended puttin it on standard springs coz they look too close u can also see where its been hittin the chassis and wore away at the bottom of car, in all everything felt tight and most parts to do with suspension and drop links etc are new, even with the car jacked up theres about a 3mm gap between the chassis and anti roll bars
-
#12does any1 know if i need more space than a 3mm gap between the anti roll bars and chassis?
-
#13try some polybush antirollbar bushes.
-
#14I no that the drop links look like they are new but i would have a good look over them. I had a set of for about a month and one started knocking
-
#15i have the same problem , i have a 99 vtr , not lowered . sound come from front passenger, sometimes never here it then turn or go over bumps in road and it knocks , not a dull noise either , more like an actual knock . i have also look all around discs and stuts and nothing seems loose or looks out of place , just brought a haynes saxo manual so gonna go through evrything ..... ill keep checking this thread for help rather than starting a new one
-
#16i have this problem 2 it so annoying
-
#17i had another look last nite gonna uprate all bushes and engine mounts i traced the knocking to be on the suspension i jacked it up slightly and put a crow bar under the wheel to lever it up and the strut top moves up a little apparently theres meant to be little movement in there but its knockin from somewhere in there coz if put my hand on the top of it can feel it comin thru the strut tops
-
#18it was the strut tops had them done now and all smooth and quiet again
