Changing 5th gear

  1. #1
Ive read this guy write this a few times, and wondered if anyone can explain abit more. Basically buy an S1 Rallye Box then put a VTR 5th on for the economy.

The way i understand it is 5th bolts onto the box as if its like an extension and therefore can be done on the car?

Yes you can swap fifth gears as there literally stuck on the back of the box. But have a good think about it before you do as its a fruitless thing to do. The S1 rally box is that low that first on most engines is next to useless. Then with a massive gap to 5th it becomes useless apart from chugging motorway. Even then as you have a low final drive it still does not work out that great. Then you end up firth for the most part a 3 speed box if your trying to drive fast. If you have a stock VTS for example you would be best just to use a VTS box.

    Cheers for clearing that up.

Got a vtr box on the new car btw, but when i had my old car, i regulary changed form 3rd to 5th on the vts box, for just saving fuel.

If i did the vtr 5th on the S1 rallye box then i wouldnt be using it for any accelaration but just genuine toodling about from 30mph upwards.

Maybe not a VTR 5th but a VTS one so it isnt such a huge gap.

If i was to go through with this, is it simply just unbolt and bolt on the vts 5th etc? Simple job or anything i need to know or look out for?

    cheers

Right i took the end casing off a gearbox, i guess its the setup on the right as the lefthandside ones are gonna be inline with the flywheel etc.

So do i take the assembly on the right off, and replace it?
