car starts for 5 secs and cuts out and no revs?

   this is on my 106 gti as i said it starts for about 5 seconds and then just cuts out it wont take any revs when the throttle the car stops straight away any ideas??

   know that sounds dumb. (comming from me) check earths. i had this on a essy. went to turn right. and (bad earth) and my car died as soon as i tried to put my foot down. starts fine just wont rev and have the lights/inderaters on at the same time/.

   sounds like a mechincal fault to me tbh mate.
