Painting Brakes

  1. #1
    Hey,

I got my Saxo in December and passed my driving test two months ago. Since they i've only been browing these forums and following the guides of how to mod my Saxo (de-wipering etc).

I've bought some Hammerite yellow paint and plan to do my brakes calipers today. Would I be better off taking the whole caliper off or just masking, newspapering around it and spraying it whilst on?

    Thanks, loving the forums,

    Lewis.

    Hello Lewis,

It would be better if you took then off, its only on with 2 bolts, do you have calipers front and back or drums at the back?

If you have calipers do them all yellow but if there drums at the back do the drums black.

So first of all, take the calipers off. Wire brush most of the rust off and de-grease them and wire brush again to try and get rid of as much rust as you can. Then paint away

    Hope that helps,
    Lloyd.

    What lloydie said.

that is a good paint to use

I managed to do mine without removing the caliper, i just used masking tape to cover everything, but it is probably a good idea to take the caliper off

    Hi,

I have calipers at the front then I assume drums at the back. I guess it's another trip to the garage for some black spray paint?

Is it possible to take the drums off too or is that just a masking jobby?

    Thanks for the advice,

    Lewis.

No need to take the drums off as they're just big circular objects and are really easy to paint

Don't bother with spray paint, its too messy.

Buy some hammerite and apply it with a smallish paintbrush

As steve said, apply it to the back with a paintbrush.

Its up to you tho lewis, i personally think yellow drums would look gay and draw attention to the fact you have drums. Where as black would look nice with yellow calipers at the front.

I don't plan to paint the drums yellow, as like you said, they would look gay I was just wondering whether there is any point painting them black?

Also I got a spray can of Hammerite Yellow for a fiver, the big one too, I think the shop under-charged me

So i'll take the calipers off and spray them yellow. I'll leave the drums on and paint them black.

It would be a good idea to paint them black yes mate and it would keep them protected from rust and kepe them looking tidy etc. and its worth doing because its so easy.

once they get rusty they go bright orange and it looks a right eye sore behind your wheels

Alright, just took a look and I see exactly what you mean. I'm off to the shop now for a small pot of Hammerite, hopefully will only cost a few quid.

    Thanks for your help

I just gave the calipers a light sanding, then painted some red hammerite on with a brush. Did the job

i just wirebrushed my calipers and rubbed them with a clean rag then painted with a paintbrsuh using Hammerite smooth yellow,
    worked a treat

i didnt take the calipers off, but i did have the pads out at the time as i was servicing the car, so i just masked off the disk and inside where the pads sit

may as well do the drums cos you wil be happy in the future when they haven't gone rusty cos you have done it now! it will jus be more effort in the future!!
