The importance of getting your release bearing on straight.

Clutch decided to give up on me the other day. Felt a bit strange since i bought the car so i bought a clutch kit but left it untill i killed it.

With the clutch pressed in, the clutch cable fully adjusted, i still coudnt engage most gears. Shitter.

Anyway. Popped the box off and took the old clutch out to find this.

When you refit the box, you can easily knock the bearing out of place. Looks like who ever fitted this clutch did. The bearing itself is completley worn away on one side so it sat un-evenly and caused the above. New one fitted and no more problems, woop!

shit the bed, thats a good effort at killin a clutch!

Thats a bit of a shitter, obviously wasnt clipped onto the fork retaining lugs properly.

Lucky it didnt break up and destroy the entire clutch, which in turn could have took your box with it.

I know Darren, bit a of a fluke really.

Got my s2 rallye box fitted now. Sell me your quaifed xsi? Will give you £1.20 and a handy shandy from a lady friend?

i fited a brand new clutch when i put the vts engine in, must have put the friction plate slightly off centre because after 2 days and about 100 miles it gave up and ripped its self to shreds on one side!

Its pretty easy todo. Even if you knock the clutch arm on the box, it can move it out of place

Pmsl yeah me too was one of them moments.

If i get time i will knock up a bracket to mount a cam, still havent got round to making a lower brace yet either.

Have just fitted a gps head up display speedo though so i can see the speeds i achieve.
Seems as the standard speedo dissapeared when i butchered the engine loom.

    nasty that mate.
  18. #18
how much did the fixing cost?

    Hi,

The reason for your pressure plate and bearing failing in this way is due to the cross shaft bushes on the release arm wearing out. Not from the release bearing being fitted incorrectly.

I have attached some links to the technical service bulletins about this issue.

    and
