1.1 gearbox

been told that 1.1 saxo gearboxes give better accelaration, would there b much noticable difference if i put a 1.1 box into my vtr?

    Cheers

yes you gain acceleration and lose top speed, not that you can do 100+ all the time anyways
  3. #3
would it rev out quicker then, like get up the revs quicker?
  4. #4
yes as the ratios or shorter
  5. #5
keep the 1.1 box if i was you.... depending where you drive!... it will be a rapid little thing...even better get a 4 speed box from a 954cc... though i dont know if they are strong enough..

So how much less top end are we lookin at with a 1.1 box ???

Is their any down sides to this box

Can 5th gear be changed ie. 5th out of VTR box in place of 5th in 1.1 ???

I calculated the difference in speed a while back... go have a search for it, i think its around 12mph. difference. But as ratty says there arnt many times that you gonna do Vmax anyway.

VTR and 1.5D boxes are the highest ratioed whereas a 1.1 is the lowest (not sure about the 1.0 - i thought it was the same box in both), so any replacement box you have you're likely to experience better acceleration.

    Shorter ratios, so yes.

EDIT, just seen rattys post below... sorry!

vts is shorter than the 1.1 box, and no changing the 5th gear won't make any difference.

Sean, the 1.1 is the shorter of the two im pretty sure, I will check tonight.

The final drive is a much taller gear which shortens the overall ratios. The VTS 5th gear is an overdrive (im pretty sure) which is why it combines great acceleration (1st-4th) with top speed (5th)

nope vts is shorter. on 195/45 tyres with a vts box you're hitting 70@ 3535rpm. whereas on the 1.1 box you'd be hitting 71.2mph@ same revs. so 1.1 is (slightly) longer.

is then comparison like for like then in terms of the wheels ? 195/45's on a 1.1?

or 165/70/r13, 165/65/r14's which are standard on 1.1's? because the rolling radius is different which may account for the difference in speed. I've got the ratio's for boxes knocking around at home and im very sure the ratios on a 1.1 are shorter.

nope i only compared 5th gears (which is slightly longer on the 1.1), and yup compared both on 195/45 15's otherwise it wouldn't be a fair comparison. i'm not sure about the ratios of the other gears or final drive but both 'boxes are very similar.

Its the final drive that makes the difference, i remember it from another thread which was along the same line as this one.

4.2 for the 1.1 final drive seems to ring a bell, but im just pulling this out of my head, as i say i'll have a look tonight for the previous post.

    If im wrong then sorrrrryy!

Just another thing I'm pretty sure there's a few people who take their saxo's to drag strips and use a 1.1 box.

yep i know it's final drive that makes the difference. and you could be right, i've just had a quick check on ssc(!), vts final drive is 3.9, 1.1 is 4.2

    arhhhh. query solved!

    cheers man!
