MATT PAINT... what do I need?

  1. #1
Ok so I have a car that is, let's say.... far from perfect. It basically needs a full respray.

So the plan? Pay £1k+ for a full respray in OE colour or do it myself in an army grey type matt finish.....

Bearing in mind I have almost no experience painting pannels what do I need?

I gather I will have to "scotch" the pannels first, then use filler to smooth any imperfections....... then what?

Tin of hammerite smooth tbh unique

Fully sand the body down - every little bit

use filler to bring up any low areas I'd assume, small dings etc

sand all of that back and then the usual painting process... Few layers of primer, sand back after each one, then the colour same as before, and lacquer same as before and bake

You using rattle cans or a compressor?

i asked a back street garage my way how much for a respray and he said £600 to £750 as its only a 3 door and he had just done a mk2 vtr and it looked very good

dont try and do it yourself mr180, lots of people try on little bits and there easy but when you start doing a full paint job its totally different, i tried it once and it was a big mistake.

No pics at the mo but every pannel has been keyed and there are a few "dents" in it which need some filler action
  11. #11
As you said, sand it down and filler over imperfections until the surface is exactly level with no dents as they will show up under the paint.
Spray on a few coats of primer, using a bit of wet and dry paper in between coats.
Then spray on a few coats of your desired colour, not sure if you wet and dry this time or just leave to dry im between coats.
This is information to the best of my knowledge and may not be 100% but it covers the basics as im in the process of helping my mate spray his 106.

when ive done bump strips etc in satin black (i know its not exactly the same but similar) ive used hi build primer first to build up a bit of a textured layer underneath rather than smooth! could be an option for yeee

no sir, its harder to get a run but it can be done...

    Step 1
Remove everything you dont want to paint or mask up..
Step 2 Get a dual action sander and using p240 or on the worst bits p180 discs sand the whole car down..
Step 3 Use a scotch to get to all the hard areas..
    Step 4 Mask her up..
Give the car a good degreasing all over and then tack rag it to remove dust
Step 5 Use plastic primer and spray onto any plastics
Step 6 Prime the rest of the car
Step 7 Bake the car or 24 hours later give the primer a good nib over with p500 paper
Step 8 Apply your colour over everything

Thats a very quick but rough guide hope it helps..

If you have repairs to do then do them inbetween steps 1 and 2...

I'd get an oil free compressor and a decent gravity fed gun.

There is also a place on eBay that can mix any matt colour for you.

Right, dont use these papers as they are far to rough, all you will do is scratch the paint and the rattle cans wont cover it! Flat all panels down with 1000 grit wet and dry. Any panels that need filler work, sort this out at this stage and make sure its all smooth, filler prime over any filler areas, but if the paint is an ok finish, you dont need to prime the whole car, you can just spray onto the paint work, if its quite poor then its worth priming everything. I have sprayed a car with rattle cans in matt colour, it is doable, but you come to problems like spraying the roof, as your spraying down the rattle can doesnt work properly, so you will need to tilt the whole car at an angle to get it to work well. Take your time mate and it would come out quite good

    powellyboi's got the idea
but you dont have to sand down the whole car mate
longs u skotch the car and have it degreased the paint will stick to the paint fine.

Suggestion if you`ve got a couple of scrap panels lying around then practice on those before attempting the real thing.

i have a mate, he is on here actually ( lead_foot ) he paints most of his cars in a matt finish. hes done full jobs on 2 mercs, and full jobs on 2 BMW E36... and tbh, they looked smart as fuck!

only used rattle cans aswell. took him a day or two for an entire car.
ask him, he'd proberally do it for you too haha!

Matt is easy enough to paint with

you wont get a decent key trying to rub a whole car down with 1000grit! 180 on a da will do the job fine.

180 paper will score the car paint that deep that the scratches will be shown once painted, dont forget rattle can paint is very thin, its not like using 2 pac paint!

So would something like a 600 grip be what I need? Coarse enough to key the paint but not too much I'll have mountain ranges on the pannels???
  24. #24
Before you start I suggest you get a manuel (one of these would do) and after reading the stages in there practise on door, body panels that you got.

When working on a small item its much easier to get hang of holding the gun and spraying in a 50/50 overlap motion so thats why I recommend doing that.

If you were local I would've gave you a hand but you're too far.

ALDI do a pretty good compressor

Painting it Matt is a stroke of genius

Yes you maybe get away with that, or 800 grit, you only need to matt the finish of the panel. I would also do a panel at a time, thats how i did it, worked well.

Something else id suggest is one of these

Makes it alot easier on your fingers and you dont get tired and gives a better motion. Id love to help with this, love painting but your miles away from me

    Well here i am .

TBH mate your best using MATT colours if its your first time doing it , I have never once rubbed down my car before spraying it and i have NEVER used primer on them either.

Matt black is your best option or (im actually being serious) bathroom paint in a spray can , I tried this for a laugh on my E36 cos i was making it 'rat look' it come out pretty well tbh . And you can jet wash the paint after a few days it wont come off

Only thing need to do ,

~ Remove all lights (or cover them up with newspaper)

~ Cover all windows up with newspaper and masking tape .

Here is my Merc C200 i had when i was 17
This is done in MATT BLACK (cant go wrong with this colour tbh plus its like less than £2 a can , i sprayed my entire merc on about £18 worth )

and my RAT E36 (sprayed in bathroom matt brown paint)

and my latest merc c180 (polizei replica)

Also both the above cars i have sprayed
    ~ WITH RATTLE CANS

~ ON MY DRIVEWAY (with no shelter)

~ used newspaper and masking tape to cover everything up

It really is so easy to do if you mess it up then spray it again in a different colour .
