Your ideal VTR Engine.

Hey guy’s heres a good one for ya, I’ve just come into a bit of money bout 4 grand and was thinking of throwing into my VTR. She’s already lowered 50mm all round and has a nice cool air feed induction. Anyways I’m leaving the outside standard cuz I love it; I have no intention of putting a VTS in it or selling her im also aware this is kinda a waste of money but hey its gonna be good fun. So that in mind if you were me what would be your favorite set up for fast road use and track days. Let’s keep it simple say just do bullet points. ie.

    1. carbs from R1
    2. Full decat with 421
    3. Port n polish/Bore
    4. Road Cams
    5. Remap
    6. Supercharge

Okay so that maybe complete over kill for 4 grand but you get the idea. Also whilst I can knock a std Saxo about I have no idea on high end modification so bare cheapish labor cost in mind as I have some good contacts.

    Enjoy.

Spose i should also mention its a Mk1 VTR blacktop 1.6 done 114000 miles, Can change the engine over if need be to a yonger one.

My ideal 8v engine is one with 8 more valves

Carbs are cack, backwards step in tuning to fuel injection.

A supercharged engine would be the route id go on an s1 rallye inlet.

To be honest mate NA tuning a VTR lump when youve got that amount of money is a waste of time, the 16v lump is just so much better for that. So if you dont want to put oe of them in your bay Id reccomend a medium boost turbo setup, and then spend the rest on decent suspension and brakes, and some lightweight wheels

If I was going to tune an 8v id rather tune the 1.4 xsi than the VTR tbh.

If you've got 4000, buy a VTS engine and get it fitted. - £800

    Buy throttle bodies - £1200
    Buy crazy cams £300
Buy ECU & get it mapped - £800

Then with the remaining 900. Get some nice tyres £300, some nice brakes £300 and some track time.

I know you say you don't want to fit a VTS, but putting 4 grand into a VTR still wont put you near a VTS with 2 grand in it. Theres really no reason not to put a VTS in with 4000 at your disposal.

liking the feedback guys, i only want to keep the 8v in it because its a VTR and wanted to keep it that way, I see it that if its got a 16v in it then its not a VTR. But that said i can be convinced lol.

    See my vtR...

sounds like your engine at the mo would need to go anyway so i would say replace that with a vts engine theres no point putting in another VTR engine if you want to get more power
  11. #11
I can see me buyin a VTS lump at this rate, Is there any love at all for the good old original 8v?
  12. #12
is this an unlimited budget or to 4k?

    If i had stuck with 8v;

    S1 Rallye Inlet
S/c conversion including single pass GMC/PACE intercooler - Unrestricted charger
    Oil Cooler
    Head with larger valves
    Standalone
    Forged Rods, Pistons
Stroker Crank - up to 1.8l

But then decided that i would get more power, for less outlay with 16v. £1k more for new crank and custom rods compared to JP4 lump. And much more potential with the extra valves.
  16. #16
    Easy then for 4k

    1) turbo kit using tubi manifold etc 1.5k max poss less
    2) ecu £500
    3) mapping 2-500
    4) bilstein grp n suspension and faulkners £400?
    5) hispec 4 pots £500
    6) wheels and tyres to go over above £300?
  17. #17
thanks everyone, well it seems that if i throw 4k at my 8v i may end up wishing i put a 16v in first. rather than having 4k worth of regrets i think ill go for the conversion, just seems the sensible thing todo.
  18. #18
    vts engine
    turbo
    4 pots
    billies.
  19. #19
4k would get you a built turbo engine I would guess. Would be my choice for sure.

8v with an s1 rallye inlet would be cool.

im sorry put a downer on it but no vtr with over 100,000miles on it is work 4k being spent on it. sell up and put that ontop of the 4k and get a newer vtr or vts or even a c2. you can pick up an 02plate vtr with decent milage for just over 2k then u got 2k plus wotever u got from the sale from your car to mod it.
  21. #21
    boost....
  22. #22
i like you thinking best way to spend your money, my vtr dips into my wages before i do lol FORGE --- TURBO --- their is so much you could do with that amount. make it unique. just make sure you look after it with that millage. for the price of new engine n fitting i would forge it steel conrods... then go crazy!

browse saxperience ask a few questions then ull be away.. be warned a start has no finish.. enjoy

No worries on that one im well aware the engine aint got much life left in it, but the car has. its in tip top condition, ive seen 02 plates looking allot worse than mine. i have no intention on selling her at all just gona give her a new engine and 3k of lovin which she diserves lol.

allways an option, with a younger engine of course! think a 50bhp shot would blow my current engine to pieces.

i pikked up my Vtr 01 for £1900 with only 44 on it.. which i thought was wonderful lol.. not to mention it was mint condish

This lad on the rally reg WAS selling his engine which made 134bhp at the wheels:
    http://www.106rallyeforum.com/forum2...ad.php?t=65633

That would be as far as i would take an 8v lump. Plus it was mapped by Sandy alot of people regard him as one of the best.

Hes now trying to sell the whole car, if he dont have any luck he still might break it.

I'm not very technical but the idea of a supercharged VTR sounds good to me. I would then invest in a good suspension and brake setup.

    3 plug bottom end.
    s2 rallye head (bigger valves)
    s2 ecu
    newmans ph2 cam
s1 rallye inlet with vts TB
    BMC
    janspeed fanimold
    supersprint race system

full rebuild on the cylinder head and bottom end.

    should be healthy....
