bigger brakes?

  1. #1
looking to upgrade my stoppers for something from the bigger cars, what can i fit under vts alloys?
306 gti-6? do you just use 306 disks and calipers, all bolt on?
any other considerations (cant afford 4 pots just now)
  2. #2
See if this helps. I asked this question the other day:

    http://www.saxperience.com/forum/sho...d.php?t=245251

im just struggling to find out if the 306 calipers and disks just bolt straight on and will fit under my wheels, and if it'll make any difference if im still using my vtr MC
  4. #4
what are you using the car for lee? i did a bit of research on brakes recently
  5. #5
just road use for now but enjoy a good bit of fun down the lanes but have never had any faith in my brakes. currently got drilled and grooved disks and mintex pads
  6. #6
for that kind of use, a 266mm set up would be more than capable. adsayers running 266 and says theyre fine, even for the odd bit of track use

from what ive found out in recent times, its the pads and discs which need the most attention

you could buy huge brakes / 4pots etc etc, but if your not running decent pads such as ferrado or mintex then theres not much point

im not the most knowledgeable, but most of the info i got regarding brakes is from the tech members on here / other forums

i'd be using decent disks and pads, probably mintex again. whats 266m 206 gti?
  8. #8
206 gti or 306 gti-6 266mm... off and on pretty much... works well i have them under my 14's.... if you have 15s 206 gti 180 brakes will fit...

yeah the 206gti is 266 aswell as a few others, can get a set of calipers & carriers pretty cheap, a few guys off here are selling

not sure if alexR is still selling his set up

the 206gti180 is a 283mm set up iirc

and they are the same fitment as the current set up

i know what you mean about the standard saxo brakes just feeling... shite lol
  10. #10
    306 hdi 2ltr has 266mm iirc also

get some braded hosed too, dam rubber hoses...
  11. #11
so if i get hold of a set of gti-6 or 206gti they'll just bolt on? and then buy disks off kam or similar sites for either model they again just bolt on and will fit fine under my wheels? no spacers or adapters needed for anything?
the main thing im worrying about is i'll get them on and it will all be the same due to the current master cylinder not being up to the job?

yeah, all the 306 range is 266 apart from the gti6 which is 283 i think

braided hoses ftw, swampy on here can get exact hoses for £25 posted

i have just had the 266mm off my 206 hdi fitted today it now feels mint... im just running smoth discs and green stuff pads but what an better set up than the vtr one...
  14. #14

Your best off with the 266mm set up then

I got mine (calipers) for £30 from my local car brakers...
  16. #16
why does kam list 20.5mm and 22mm thick disks for the 206 gti?
  17. #17
206 MC improvs things more... mine work well... i have 266mm braded hoses grp n disks and pads

not sure, best sending a PM kam on that one
  20. #20
you may bottom out if you hit the stoppers hard... your down 80mm right???
  21. #21
60mm, it bottoms out as it is if i brake hard on uneven ground lol! need stiffer shocks
  22. #22
have you stil got the car ?
  23. #23
yep still got mine, not selling now im finishing it off!

kam list 306 gti brakes as 283mm?

yep, 306gti6 brakes, are different to the other 306 brakes
  25. #25
think im gonna go for gti-6, might as well get the bigger ones! brakes can never be too good
  26. #26
wow not too bad, £135 for mintex pads and maxtorque group n disks from kamracing. just need some gti-6 calipers on there own cheap now!
always thought it'd cost more than that
  27. #27
are xsara vts calipers the same as gti-6 ones?
  28. #28
yeah lee theyre the same mate
  29. #29
IMO I'd save for a bit longer for 4pots. Can get second hand sets for around 250 with discs n pads.

I love mine and regret not getting them sooner!! The power is immense and effortless with a bigger mc.

    for a non-track user though?

    overkill to say the least
  31. #31
i really dont need 4 pots just yet and cant justify the extra cost
  32. #32
Gti-6 ones will need a bit of grinding, generally most sold on here have already been done.

    206 gti's are 266mm

    206 gti 180bhp are 283mm

    I wouldn't bother with 266mm's tbh
  33. #33
266mm Brake set up is more than capable for road use and as mentioned, the odd track day aswell is fine. Plus, they are alot lighter than the gti-6 set up as well thus meaning faster car (although we are talking 0.00000000001 seconds, it all counts!)

Both the 266mm and the GTi-6 calipers need a little grinding to fit under the rims.
  34. #34
I want GTI6 brakes for my car. They should look good with my wheels i think

  35. #35
    where do they need grinding?
  36. #36
ha, was watching some xsara ones on ebay, they were at £9.99 ith no bids, then in the last 15 minutes of the auction theyve shot up to £78!!!! with a tenner postage added on theyre not much more brand new!!!
  37. #37
hang about i'm looking to do the same as lee here. So what is best for fast road use as it is called? 283mm calipers from the 206gti 180? braided hoses, some nice discs and mintex pads and we are all gravy?
  38. #38
306gti 6 calipers should be cheaper, as theyre "older"

but 266mm are better for fast road / light track
  39. #39
right got you 266mm it is. What is the size of the vtr ones then?
  40. #40
    Vtr are 247mm
the gti6 ones may not be much more than £80 each new but its the yokes that make them fit that are the expensive part.
    Over £100 the pair new
wherd as when u buy 2nd hand you would get the yokes aswell
  41. #41
id get gti180 calipers mate cant fault mine had them for about a year, using mintex discs and pads to they still stop spot on.
also you dont have to mess around with grinding them like the gti 6 ones and are straight fit under vts alloys as ive trial fitted some before.
