My Mk1 Westy & Friends Mk1 Vtr are Quartz if this helps.
  3. #3
    they are?
surely it cant be that different, i think arctic steel is perhaps slightly lighter?
i just remember when i had my westie, halfrauds sold me arctic steel for it.
so ive got a few cans left...but halfrauds are halfrauds =/
i might just have a go...

Don't use cans for a bumper!!

Use a compressor and gun, finish will last longer and be infinately better!

Maybe he doesnt have a compresser gun. If you are good you can get a finish that lasts plenty and looks good enough with cans.
Thats comments no help to him.

Your wrong on so many levels, i have some friends that are ace with spray cans, though you can always tell tbh. And also stone chips and things cut STRAIGHT through can paint as its thinner then proper 2k or celly.

Easy enough to pick up second hand for less then £120 for multiple uses. Most people will buy one and sell on or just borrow one.
I used to can spray, did bumpers on my old "R" after repainting for the 4th time i got myself a compressor and used the interent to learn how to paint.

So it wasn't unhelpful, probably the most sensible piece of advice in this thread.

Not really at all since he was asking if the colour could go with it..
And clearly you havnt done a good job if you had to respray 4 times, my front bumper looks and feels fine and has only one chip in it since been done with cans 4 months ago and its gone through allsorts of terrain.
If its a small job like that and you are GOOD with cans then it will be fine unless you want it showroom standard. Using a gun and doing the whole bumper gives great results but if your just doing the strips it can still look good with cans.
I do admit I used a gun on the rear panelling though due to guns usually have most noticable difference on a bigger area.

We have had our wires crossed, i thought the OP might have been doing the entire bumper.

Miss-read, my bad. Still valid on larger areas though, even smaller IMO these days, once you have the set up, i'd say its cheaper to spray through gun too!

Did a full custom respray for a mate recently in candy apple green, at a total cost of £400 including filler and etch, masking and w+d, about 2k cheaper than anybody shop!

I think I mite be bringing my car to you for a full respray how much would you do it for lol, did you do like the insides of the door etc or just a exterior spray?
And yeh gun is alot cheaper for bigger jobs cos you just buy a big bucket of the paint lol
Yeh I think he is just doing the black bumper strips. I used cans on that and my grill but a gun on a piece of panelling.

my silver MK2 vtr's colour code is artic steel mate..
and use citroen arctic steel, on my grille and the colour between that and the car is very different.. ore of an icelandic colour, and i have a quartz wheel arch on ther, and the colour is diff ther aswel, no as much of a diff as with the grille tho..
so dno if any help to you at all, but thats how my silvers are..

Lol i did his as a favour as he loaned me alot of money in times of crisis without me even having to ask. Did everything bar the engine bay and undercarpeting, just the bits you can see with the trim in places, only took about 2 weeks aswell. Hard graft though, the two of us up at 6 working through till 6 ish.

USed 2k aswell, bad stuff that shit.

...in the process of it now.
the arctic steel looks a tad lighter more like iclandic grey
but, its drying so we'll see when its done.
bit of paint running on the left hand side, bit grim.
few more coats should be reet.

Give it a quick 800 W+D then a few more coats to get rid of the runs!
  17. #17
gna be grim if the arctic steel is a diff colour.
    hmph...quartz it is! haha.

  21. #21

ive left some tape on etc if your wondering what that is, i think im going to re-do it tomoro with the quartz.
doesnt look quite right. bit too shiney and it stands out.

I can't view either of those - it's saying an error has occurred.
I painted my bumpers last year after reversing into a wall - I figured the easiest way to repair it would be to just colour code it. I got the paint in cans from Halfrauds, and it was supposedly a 'match'.
    Absolute Crap.
It is a completely different colour, still is, and even though my dad has owned a painting shop for the past 30 years, and he did it, it's awful. I'm just going to get some more bumpers and side trims and leave them black!
  28. #28
    what colour did you use?
as you can see by the first 2 pics i posted, the colour was "arctic silver"
didnt match, just gone over it with "quartz silver" and its perfect!
few more coats and ill be doing the front and splitter tommoro hopefully.
ill get some proper pics up aswell, not about imageshack =/ ftl

I used Quartz, which is what the colour code in my car said it was.
  30. #30
I used quartz on my grill and it came up a different shade
  31. #31
    REALLY?
hmph, well my bumper looks fine now in quartz.
its called citroen quartz silver btw. from halfrauds
should have the front done today, weathers nice.
    J x
  32. #32
well, congrats! I dunno why mine didn't work out..
Did you sand down your bumper and fill the texture and everything?
  33. #33
yeh, i used 600 grid w+d but not too much as its plastic.
enough to make the primer stick though.
then with the paint used a heat gun so it stuck =/
ive got a few small bubbles and its a tad cloudy aswell but for a perfect finish? not gonna happen with rattle cans at the end of the day. few more coats and laquer should look ok though.
