Saxo VTS vs Golf Gti 1.8T

  1. #1
Hi, Just sold my car and im looking at a VTS or Golf Gti 1.8T

Now i know this site will be biased lol but....

    Are they similar performance?
  2. #2
    Hmmm ... Tough choice there.

    [/Sarcasm]
  3. #3
i think golf is around 150BHP, VTS is around 120BHP with a weight of 898kgs, not sure of golf weight
  4. #4
    A VTS weighs more than 898kg's ...

A friend of mine had an S, sold it for a 1.8T and within weeks was back in an S.
He found it dull and boring.

Straight line Standard Golf would be marginally quicker than a standard S.
Show them some corners and I'd rather be in the S all day long.
  5. #5
saxo over golf you picked the wrong car with that engine in an octavia vrs id pick that over the vts because im not a fan of vws, although i am pulled toward a nice one every now and again. them 1.8t vag lumps are very tunable though.
  6. #6
go for the vts much more fun i had a 1.8t 150bhp model and it felt sluggish even compared to my current mk2 vtr.....

  8. #8
    ^^^ Incorrect.

    1.8T is 150 bhp.

wrong!!!!! the 1st of the mk4 golf 1.8 turbos were 150bhp, the 2.0 gti model was around 120 bhp

the 180bhp turbos came later in the mk4 range
  10. #10
having driven a gof 1.8 T I was very disapointed very boring to drive boost is gradual and don't punch you in the back, (unless it's remapped etc etc) I have a punto GT and that knocks the golf in fits for fun factor, but the vts is even more fun than both on the twisties lol, and golfs have heavy repair bills when they go wrong too get a vts mate IMO
  11. #11
    The Golf obviously.
  12. #12

saxo will dick all over the golf, my mates got one its slow as shit. but thats not what its for, its a well built comfy car thats safe and comfy with a bit of go. the saxo is a potential deathtrap, but at least you'll enjoy yourself on the way out lol
  14. #14
    saxo will go rong
    the golf wont

    2.0 GTI (8 valve) = 115BHP
    1.8 20V GTI (non turbo) = 125BHP
    1.8T GTI = 150BHP
    1.8T GTI Anniversary = 180BHP

not strictly true they do have their fairshare of problems for a german car, my mate had a problem with the turbo on his and replacing the maf sensers or something all the time fucknos as i have no interest in them at all but personally id rather buy a jap turbo for the price of the golf which is well overpriced. id go for an octavia vrs tbh its not got the im better than everyone else because the dub scene is the only scene worth looking at badge on it.
  17. #17
dunno german cars are more reliable then the french lol
depends how old the golf is and how much miles it has
  18. #18
    Go for the Golf tbh......
  19. #19
Golf, can easily be pushed to 400bhp, and not to mention 20 VALVES! acceleration is really good.
  20. #20
depends what you want it for. personally dont like the golf and think its slow for what it is compared to the VTS....

This guys good, my mates got Anniversary edition and had it remapped to a supposed 230bhp by jbs, but we all know that's B******* Slightly quicker than my GTi in a straight line, but he can't overtake me on a straight unless you're going towards double figures, not chased him round many corners but it understeers alot from what my other mates have told me.

They're very tunable can go upto about 400bhp before having to forge the internals, but when you hammer them they drink petrol... Where as my GTi only uses abit more.
  22. #22
we mapped my mates to 200bhp the other day.........its better now but imo..........still looks and feels boring
  23. #23
Depends what engines it is, the early AGU ones had stronger internals and less common problems but came with a K03 turbo and can only gain about 190BHP with a remap.

The later models had the AUM engine and K03S turbo and when re-mapped can see 200+ bhp.
  24. #24
I think i will test drive both cars and decide from ther, Thanks guys.
  25. #25
    golfs boring, std and mapped.

vts beats it handsdown unless u sit on the motorway for ages every day
  26. #26
Why bother with the golf, when for the same or less money you can get a Leon cupra R with 225bhp and better handling?
  27. #27
    golf 1.8t go for 1.5k-3k.
show me a leon cupra r for that much please?
  28. #28
i have just sold my Audi A3 1.8 Turbo 150BHP model. Had a VTS and they are pretty similar on acceleration, audi has alot better top end. handled like a barge unlike the vts! would pick a vtS anyday apart from build quality and comfort. Down to what you want out of a car though!
  29. #29
i have had a golf 20v t then had a ibiza cupra R running 267bhp 280flbs witch was a handful to say the least
tbh they are in my view the better cars but parts are not cheap an for the price of a turbo u could buy a hole vts engine
    hard choice to make
  30. #30
I second scaff19 try a remapped ibiza cupra/r mine was only running 194bhp bt 266lbs/ft of torque. Pulls real well and handles nicely with coilovers and 20mm rear spacers still handling doesn't compare to my s.
  31. #31
+ Half leathers cruise control etc etc

I'd still have the VTS, i'm getting one as my next car, yet i'll be doing 80+ miles a day on the motorway

And who ever said the golfs are more reliable must be dreaming, my gf's sisters have both had ones, one of them the electronics cut in and out when they felt like it, normally on the motorway though and the other is a diesel version, had all new sensors and a new turbo on it and it still dont run or idle properly

I don't know about the GTi in particular but I know quite a few people who have moved away from VWs and Audis just because they kept going wrong and were very expensive to fix.

Their perceived quality means they hold their value well though.
  34. #34
if your considering golf 1.8t consider seriously a clio sport ... theyre the new saxo tbh and id rather a 172 than a vts anyday

    honest
  35. #35
not to mention the vts's now arent that much of a bargain, fuel is alright same as 172, tax is more i think for the newer saxos, insurance is only abit more on the 172 but the 172 is quicker... not to mention i think although theyre both french shitboxes the cliosport will be more reliable and once uv done ur usual work to the saxo on the clio it will be a very powerful pocket rocket in comparision to the vts... even then u dont need to do alot of work to the 172 basically lowered good brakes a catback strut braces ur done with it and u have a awesome road car, dont forget your tires also
  36. #36
Speed wise there isn't much in it as said.

Personally i'd prefer the golf. Much better built cars which suits my needs a lot better. When you spend time on the motorway etc. the comfort of air-con etc. can't be argued with.
  37. #37
forgot to say cliosports have comforts.. lol xeons etc the 182 cup cruise control etc.. consider them

The 182 is expensive compared to the golf. 172 maybe not anymore... small car though.
  39. #39
    golf all the way

better build quality and feel, ie saxo is a tin can and everything inside feels like its going to break

    very tune-able engine

and if my saxo was anything to go by much more reliable,

and couldnt the handleing be spice up a bit with a few suspension mods ?

i pretty much regreted buying my saxo from day one
  40. #40
You can make the Golf look this good, you cant do that to a saxo

  41. #41
Get a mk2 golf with a 20vt in it, mines goes really well althogh doesnt handle as good as my S. BAM is the engine code to go for, comes with the k04 turbo too so with a good map and qpeng ecu well over 300bhp can be achieved.
  42. #42
    100% golf mate.
  43. #43
people whove never owned or experience a vts will say golf, but tbh my vts is better in so many ways than the lower end paxos even vtr's, try both and see what u feel suits u more

id personally get a leon cupra r tho.. rather than a golf

    ,
they are essentially the same cars thoe arent they, an surely a golf would be a better investment. hold its money better
  45. #45
Depends what you plan on doing with it and at what budget really, golfs are arguably more reliable, but when they do break god damn they expensive to fix vs the cheaper to fix less reliable french car!

If you wanna mod it a golf costs alot more per item vs a saxo from what i have seen.

Golf is more tunable in theory but isn't cheap to do.
I personally would probably lean more towards the golf but is purely for build quality etc but for pure fun which driving should be i would pick my 106 gti any day of teh week
  46. #46
To put an end to this thread,
i work for leeds volkswagen as a mechanic and i have a vts, its 12 years old and never goes wrong, last week i fitted an engine on an 08 golf that had done 15k.
    Reliable my arse

    lol, thats true!
Golf = St Pauls Cathederal with 150 bhp
Saxo Vts = crisp packet with 120 bhp
