Important! : Questions About Refurbing VTR Alloys

   Ok i started refurbing my vtr wheels tonight, damn its hard work
   A few questions though :
   
   1) The lip has a few dents in it, even though ive smoothed the surface with sanding they are still visible, do I need to get hold of some filler for this? Run it round the lip the sand it smooth ?
   
   2) Im useing the guide on here, it doesnt mention spraying the back and inside, I gather you do this though right ? And if you do, does this need to be sanded aswell even though it isnt painted ?
   
   3) Im useing 80grit sand paper to sand as its alot quicker, in some places it has gone right down to the metal, do I need to sand the whole thing to the metal to match it, or can it be left as primer and metal patches ?
   
   4) It does seem abit scratched now its sanded, when I go over with the fine paper will this get rid of them ? Or does it not matter as it will be painted ?

   1) tbh mate it depends how deep the and visable they are n once you've put the primer n pain on you wont see em as much
   2) if i was you i would spray them all over but see what other people say lol
   3)ye you should go to the same level or you might end up with sum blotches when you paint em
   4) ye they should go after a few mins of fine sand paper (y)
   btw wot colour you sprayin em ??

   like said, if the dents are deep, get some filler and fill in all the gaps and sand them down to follow the lip
   mine had a few areas that were down to the metal abit more than others, but this didnt really affect the final outcome of the wheel once sprayed, just run your finger over and see if you can feel any slight bumps where its gone down more.
   just a fine wet and dry paper, they will come out nice and smooth

   On the alloy front theres no dents, its only on the lip, so i was thinking get some filler run it round the lip with my finger then sand it smooth once dry.
   
   Yeah I was thinking spray behind as it will be noticable, but I dont have to sand that part right ?
   
   It is the same level mate its just some areas I have sanded it down to the metal whereas the rest sanded down to the primer.

   erm yeah should be ok to filler them
   i would sand behind but i spose it dont matter if its not as good as the front cos you dont see it anyway lol
   n coz ur sprayin em black you wont see any bits you missed as much coz its a dark colour

   Or on the other hand any missed bits will stand out like a sore thumb because the metal underneath isn't black... it's silver!

    ok its going well but have a few more questions lol...
    
    1) if the surface is smooth after primer do you still have to sand it very lightly wet or dry ? or can u go ahead with the paint ?
    2) how long do you wait before putting on the laquer? some say 6hours some say 24hours.
    3) do you do the inside aswell or just the front ?

    well to start off epic fail using 80 grain BECAUSE its quicker lol should be takeing your time and using 180 and not takeing them back to bare metal only take back to bare metal if need be the dents might have to be alloy welded if there 5mm deep or more if there not using filler is fine.
    
    once sanded with 180 and filled and smoothed dents scotch the whole alloy then primer. 3 coats will be fine
    
    then add a guide coat and smooth primer with 400 wet and dry.
    
    once done thinners the whole wheel to remove any crap and paint desired color also 3-4 coats then alloy to dry befour laqureing.

    ok thanks mate, when smoothing the primer before the color does the wet/dry paper need to be wet ? and how hard do you sand, just to get it smooth right ?
    also once the desired color has been applied how long must you wait before applying laquer ?

    i sprayed mine mate with alloy spray, sanded them down and came up trumps. just clean the inside ans spray them aswell cos when your car is parked and you look at the wheels you can sii the inner side of the wheel so defo do the inside mate. and mine has scratched dents around the rim, couldnt sort them so sprayed them, hides them abit

    ok nearly finished one this is how i did it :
    
    1) Fully scrubbed it with degreaser inside and out then dired
    2) Deflated and covered whole tyre in paper and masking tape
    3) Sanded down to primer(some places metal)
    4) Used filler around the lip then once dried sanded down
    5) Sanded the alloy with fine wet/dry paper
    6) Sprayed with grey primer inside and front, few coats
    7) 24hours later lightly sanded the front with fine wet/dry paper
    8) Sprayed chosen color of gloss black about 5 coats (didnt spray the inside as the grey primer gives it a nice look, plus you dont really notice the inside, also this builds up with dirt in time and becomes black anyway !
    9) Will leave 24hours then spray clear laquer on, good couple coats
    10) Pump up, add tyre shine and put on rim tape
    
    Hope that all sounds about right !

    Having been a profesional sprayer for a few years ( at a BMW dealer) it does make me laugh when people say you should sand your colour between coats.
    
    These were done with rattle cans in a dusty garage. Sand lightly with 100 grit. Smoothed with 1000grit (all done wet). Grey primer (several coats with no sanding inbetween). Several more coats of gloss black (again, no sanding...) Left to dry for a week (because I was away) and stuck on rim tape. Easy peasy...

    no i didnt sand between coats. i did sand the final coat of primer once dried after 24 hours so the surface is smooth before adding the color paint. as primer doesnt go on as thin it isnt very smooth once dry and will look shit if it isnt lightly sanded

    well its common sense, when the primer is dry it leaves a rough surface also can crumble in some parts. if you were to spray color straight on it would be bumpy and probably flake off. thats why you need to sand the primer once dry very lightly to get a smooth surface an to create small grains for the paint to stick !
    if you look at the how to guide on here a bodyshop OWNER says exactly the same.. go figure

    That's because you don't need to. I have never sanded a coat of primer in my life!

    you dont HAVE to, but if the primer is rough then you should do so that the paint finish is smooth..

    i am not questioning peoples proffesions or what people have done in the past lol, this is the first time ive done this!
    all im saying is after the primer was dry and i was about to add the color the surface was very rough and gritty? in some places. so i just went over it with fine sand paper wet and dry just to make it extra smooth (Y)
    
    btw just added the rim tape on the 1st one, absolute pain in the ass to put on, tiny bit wonky in places but looks good enough

    The lip was just some motorbike rim tape, £7 I think off ebay (Y)
