torsion bar day...didnt get far =/

thought id takle the old torsion bar etc today.
got to work and jacked me vtr up, wheels off. lube lube lube lube.
loosend all the shiz, then got stuck
take the anti roll bar out before the actual torsion bar correct?
trouble is, its stuck...i used a longer bolt like guides say, to screw up against the inside of the anti-roll bar so it would prize the plate off...nope.
hits the inside and then just spins the plate round...
    it wont come off
no point trying to tackle the torx bolf on the t-bar either rly until the anti roll bar is out?
i dont even have the correct size for it
tomoro...get right torx...and erm, struggle with a-r bar again i take it...
    any advise guys??
    cheers

suzuki tuning torsion bar guid...google it. will give you good info. aslong as you can get it unsiezed, its all good!

http://www.suzukituning.com/PSA/Susp...owering.htmthe suzuki guide. i was origianly following, however it doesnt mention removing the anti-roll bar!
and in the pics it just shows it as being loose...like mine is now!
    no removal of it.
just pull the bars out and turn them until happy...shed any light?
do i have to waste my time taking the anti roll bar out?!?!

do i read rightly that you say the ARB end plate is turning?? Are you using a slide hammer to get the ARB out??
  5. #5
hi i had the same problem trying to do my torsion bar, got everything off that had to come off, but when it came to knocking the torsion bars out to change the height they were completely seized and even i large sledge hammer was tried. any other methods of unseizing it??
  6. #6
im using a large bolt, screwing it in where the rubber torx bit is, to press up and prize the plate off.
    not got a slide hammer...
im more conserned about that suzuki guide...it doesnt mention anything about taking the ARB out at all, just the torsion bar.
    confuzled now =/

ar bar is the easy part to get out and only 1 plate comes off paasenger side iirc
  8. #8
yeh it does "slide out" apparently but its stuck and wont budge...
DO I NEED TO TAKE THE ARB OUT?
    http://www.suzukituning.com/PSA/Suspension/Lowering.htm
look at that, apparently you dont have to remove it?!?!
would make it a lot easyer...but does it make sence??

Dont think you have to remove it mate. Just unbolt the end plate to access the torsion bar end. Cant remember for sure though. havent done mine in ages.
  10. #10
Thats the one as mr n said
  11. #11
You dont have to remove it!

As long as it can move round enough to push the end plates up thus revealing the end of the bottom torsion bar on the drivers side of the car then thatll be sufficient enough

Of course with it out it is much easier but again not strictly necessary

If you're taking it out do make sure that the rubber seals that are revealed are in good condition as these are vital to ensuring that water is kept out of the beam

    thank you
so its a little easyer now.
yeh, the drivers side is free, its stiff but you can get to the t-bar.
thanks so much, all i gta do now is get a torx40 to actualy try and get the t-bar out and lower it
    ...not gna be easy
    cheers.

Its often not easy for a beginner.

    Best of luck with it

What method are you going to use for getting the torsion bars out?
  14. #14
your right, the logic of doing it is simple tbh but the actual...removal etc isnt =/
erm, well i plan to get the torx off, that little washer out then hopefully a bolt into the end of the bar - im using that suzuki guide.
trouble is, the torx is very VERY siezed, ive ran out of wd-40 and GT-85 already, i dont have the correct size torx either, im afraid of rounding it off and never getting it out tbh...
    sucks.

    hijack ftw!

Hmm its very rare that slide hammers actually work. The bottom bar is the easier of the 2 to get out, the top one you can usually guarantee that itll take more than a slide hammer

Also bear in mind that if you're pulling on that side get someone to watch that you dont pull the trailing arm off.

And definately nip to halfords and get yoursel a t40 torx bit, you will 100% need it

sledge and a bar usualy works
  19. #19
i'll get myself the right size torx.
chance it wont catch and round the head though, its very very tight.
dno wt to do if that happens, maybe a heatgun and a flat head? =P

If you round the head off it is possible to try a slightly bigger torx bit

The best way is if you know anyone with a dremmel borrow one, cut a groove acorss the head just deep enough to get a flat blade in and then with the flat blade in place knock it round with a hammer

Once theyre free theyre usually finger tight the rest of the way. Then just replace the bolt afterwards

    got the torx.
in screwdriver form, it fits snug and as hard as i tunr it doesnt slip and round but....thats the problem, no movement at ALL!
im gna try some coke on it.
getting pretty angry with it tbh...

The torx are always tight, but they'll suddenly undo and be loose as anything. If anyone needs their bar done and not capable then feel free to pay me a visit and i'm sure i can you the southerners out.
  26. #26
so keep wd 40ing and tryna twist the torx?
    itl give in eventualy?

Heat it up with something, makes the metal expand. And its probably siezed, know anyone with a buzz gun? If i were still in Wilmslow i could help!

    Darn Liverpuddliuns.

not sure id use a buzz gun on one.
