just changed the short passenger side shafts all ok, went to do the long 1 had to unbolt all the middle bearing housing etc, and the other shaft i have to totally different its off a s reg mk1 vtr and mine is a mk2 x reg are they different types etc

#2yes, long thread or short thread, tapered or non-tapered
-
#3mine is long thread the other shaft i have is short thread hubs must be bit different then am guessing, overall 1 is smaller then the other due to difference in thread
-
#4There are actually 4 types of shaft
early models with flat bearings one with intermediate bearing (the bigger models) and then the non intermediate bearing for the smaller engined cars
and later tapered bearing shafts again with and without bearing
you cannot put the wrong end (taper or non taper) shaft in it will cause hub bearing failiure -
#5can you explain the tapered for me please, smaller shaft fitted tho in both side and were the same, bloke was braking two cars tho so might be from different car
-
#6the end of the shaft where it sits in the hub differ
you allready mentioned the thread difference but if you look on the bearing face (the flat behind the thread) then the rear edge there are 2 versions
one has a 90 degree corner (flat face)
the tapered version has about a 5mm 45degree taper in there
