Gearbox is knakered?!?!

I just bought my first Saxo. Its a 1.4 west coast. It appeared to be in good condition until I got it part way home and tried 5th gear.
It went in ok, but as soon as i let the clutch up I got as screeching noise from the gearbox and the car stopped responding. Went i went back down to 4th it was ok.

After this 1st and 2nd started to make a screeching noise too, but they were working ok. I got home and went out for another drive, the car wuldnt go into 1st unless I lifted the clutch, and then a couple of hundred meters down the road it decided it didnt want to go into any gears at all.
I pulled over and waited for a bit... eventually managed to force it into gear so that i could get the car home again....

My guess is it needs a new gearbox...? I can get one for around 200, and have it fitted for almost nothing, but I dont wanna do it if you guys think it could be something else....?
The person I bought it from denies all knowledge (as you would I suppose) of there having been anything wrong with the box. But they dont break overnight!

Any ideas guys??? Would be a MASSIVE help cuz i need to get this sorted and back on the road asap!

If i was you i would drain the oil from the box and see what thats like first, look for large metal filing and teeth etc

also check the back of the drain plug as that is magnetic so attracts all of the filings etc.

Its only basic guide to the condition of the box...but i do think byt the sounds of it, the screeching points to a knackered gearbox.
