3rd gear not pulling as it should?

  1. #1
    Hiya!

Basically me and my mate both have a mk2 saxo with manifold and full exhaust.

We're equal in gear 1 and 2 then his gear 3 will just pull away like mad! Gear 4 and 5 go back to equal..

    Really dont understand it!

    Anyone have any ideas?

could be a number of things.
    condition of throttle cable
    condition of clutch
    condition of engine
    condition of tyres . . .

or he has blates whacked on a turbo!

    Mileage is roughly the same.

Ive got 4 new yokoham S drives

    Clutch is fine.

condition of throttle cable!? Were is that? And how can i check it?

engine bay, on the throttle body.
cable goes onto the round thing haha! opens the inlet, when the pedel is pushed, pulls cable, pulls spring...

right above the rocker cover you cant miss it...
just see if it sits tight or sags.

do you have an open cone filter? you coule be getting heat soak

also spark plugs and fuel filter may make a difference
  6. #6

Thats the engine... Guessing thats not a open air filter?

also spark plugs and fuel filter may make a difference - weve both got the same =x

yes you do have an open cone. basically the heat form the engine will be sucked up by the air filter. hotter air is less dense so you will be getting less oxygen than cold air and your car will be a little slower

replacing this with and enclosed system such as a bmc, raceland, simota will stop heat soak

i would reccommend new fuel filter and plugs as this will more than likely help too

    i hope this helps mate

Cheers buddy, So would new fuel filter and plugs be a service? Or just new one of them? And how much would this cost?

I dont really understand why it just happens in gear 3 aswell and not all of the gears o.0
  9. #9
yeah just get some new plugs and fuel filter. should cost around 20quid and its easy to fit them yourself

you could be suffering lack of torque from the heat soak which would explain why you notice it more in higher gears

odd that it only affects third I reckon.
  11. #11
Maybe 3rd gear has had a hard life, e.g. gear grinding

    indeed =\

Do the above and then get a remap. then you will be more equal
  14. #14
More than likely to be the heat soak to be honest mate, although as mentioned, the car probably could do with a full service.

Glad to see your enjoying the car

As the gearbox has no electronic or mechanical link to the engine's ecu, fuel pump and any other power restricting device there is no way that any power loss is caused by the engine.
Heat soak into the filter usually happens after being stuck in traffic, etc, so by the time you hit third having gone through first and second with no problems it is highly unlikely that's the problem. Unless someone with a mechanical degree says otherwise, ignore them. I have that filter and have never suffered heat soak under normal or hard driving conditions.
As far as I'm aware there is nothing on the saxo that would cause only third gear to suffer. It is after all a basic engine.

odd, if similar spec should be boyut the same, maybe 1's a better driver
  17. #17
i bet 1 of you has a shorter gearbox!

    Mine redlines before his =\

    badtimes
  19. #19
whats the redline and at what revs does the limiter kick in?
  20. #20
Drive each others cars see if his car is still faster.

Got much weight in the boot? VTR's don't pull well in 3rd so any extra weight is going to affect the speed rather a lot.
