Can someone do me a favour and measure the diameter of the tubing on an 8v aftermarket manifold,one of the four pipes that come from the head,on a straight bit,with a vernier if possible,many thanks if someone can

They will vary - the branches of the Piper 4-1 are much bigger in diameter than say a Raceland/ Supersprint.

a starting point would be good,the ports on the head are approx 30mm just wondering what the average size is?

I don't have any to hand any more so cant measure for you. Generally a good manifold will have considerably larger diameter primarys than the the head port size. The step acts as a none return valve is that stops the gasses reversing flow and backing up in to the engine.
