brake system upgrade choices?

  1. #1
iv currently got standard vts brake setup but i dont think its that good and want to upgrade to something better, can you suggest some setups i could upgrade to? and give me a guide price for this setup.

Also, what will i need to change? Is it just calipers and disks or is it more??

My mate has the GTi6 setup and he said its shit hot.

Also, whats the size of VTS discs?

266mm discs (306 and xsara sport models):
Early type(fitted to cars made before year 2000 and some later cars too, all lucas calipers and some bosch)

    Disc size: 266mm
    Disc thickness: 20.5mm
    Disc overall height: 27.9mm
    Offset: 7.4mm

Late type(fitted to most cars after 2000 with bosch calipers)

    Disc size: 266mm
    Disc thickness: 22mm
    Disc overall height: 34.5mm
    Offset: 12.5mm

    283mm Discs:

Early type(Gti6 & Xsara VTS lucas calipers):

    Disc size: 283mm
    Disc thickness: 22mm
    Disc height: 27mm
    Offset: 5mm

    Late type(206 GTi180, most 307s bosch calipers)

    Disc size: 283mm
    Disc thickness: 26mm
    Disc height: 34mm
    Offset: 8mm

The standard discs on a vts are 247mm. For a full setup you will need, calipers, carriers, discs and pads, would be worth getting some braided lines aswell.

    Good info right there ^^

The GTI-6 set up is quite heavy in comparison to the 266mm set up or a 4pot set up.

Do i need to change the master cylinder? dont know what that is just read it somewhere.

How come the first 2 setups you mentioned have 266mm discs and then you said vts's have 247mm discs? what cars come with 266mm discs then?

Could i get calipers and carriers from a scrap yard? And just new pads and discs? Dont really know what cars id be looking at at a scrap yard though would it be a 306 or something?

It is indeed, i got hold of some gti-6 calipers the other week and wasn't expecting them to be so heavy. Nearly dropped it on my foot lol.

the 306 xsi has 266mm brakes. If you're not sure just take a tape measure to the scrappy with you and measure the diamater of the discs before you strip the caliper off.

You don't have to change the master cylinder if you don't want to. It's all about personal preference with the pedal feel.

Oh sorry you said the 266mm discs are on 306s and xsaras. So if i go to a scrapyard i would need to grab callipers and carriers from a sporty 306 or xsara.

when people upgrade their brake systems to they just do the front brakes?

mainly yeah as the front brakes do most of the braking effort

mini but when changing the brake setup on a vts do you loose the abs capabilities?
just that i'll be upgrading the brakes on my vts over the winter, and am looking into various setups but that thought just popped into my head

There is no point in changing the rear brakes as they only do about 10% of the breaking, also the discs are no bigger than those on other cars such as the 306gti-6.

Okay any ideas on a rough price for just the calipers and carriers from a 306 xsi? And would this be a very noticeable upgrade compared to standard vts setup?

Do i need to change the master cylinder?

would be somewhere in between 30-40 for the calipers.

No you don't as the sensor is on the driveshaft not the disc

I've recently purcahsed a set of GTi-6 Callipers and disks, will be fitting these in the next two weeks once they've been delivered. Will report back on the affectivness of the upgrade once complete. The ABS function will not be altered by doing this.

Also, I replaced my MAster Cylinder with the GTi-6 23mm item on Saturday, only difference in this is the "pedal feel". Braking distances haven't been shortened any I'd say, however the pedal feels better (i.e- not as much travel). personal preference and worth the £25 to upgrade in my opinion.

I've looked into this quite for my track car build actually.

283mm gti6 setup is heavier than the 266mm, but i think the enhanced braking will more than make up for it. My set will also be fitted with DS2500 or Carbon Lorraine RC5+, Mintex M1144 pads on the rear & Maxtorq Grp N discs all round. The braided lines will then be filled with Castrol Response Super Dot 4.

Not sure on whether ill change the master cylinder as of yet ...

Should stop on a six pence then!!

Gti6 discs/pads, carriers & calipers were £65 off ebay (fingers crossed they are in decent condition!!) and ill be ordering the rest from Kam Racing at some point ... the rest wont be cheap though
  21. #21
Thats alright! Was that a one off auction or from a trader?
  22. #22
It was a one-off auction, but the chap was also advertising on 106 owners ...

Best having in the parts for sale section of www.306gti6.com

    Also 266mm ones at £50 here: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/peugeot-206-gt...d=p3286.c0.m14

Iv already seen those and sent him a message thanks mate I just asked abotu postage.

Is there anything else id need if i bought that 266mm setup?

Also, will they fit under 14s? Im currently on vtr rims but looking to get 15s eventually.
  24. #24
Yeah thats the benefits of the 266's - they fit under 14s ...

Should just bolt on as far as im aware
  25. #25
    oh okay thanks pal
  26. #26
Think I may opt for the 266mm set up for my VTS, as I dont fancy a load of extra weight adding to them. Got my 23mm master cylinder on the way, just need to get some DOT4 and some braided lines now
