Outside blackboard paint.

Well... getting a new bonnet soon, so want to have a bit of fun.

Thought i would get a can of primer and some blackboard paint...

However, is it true that the bonnet will just run or is blackboard paint quite durable?

Also, will the chalk just wipe straight off? With like a cloth?

    Any suggestions are welcome

Not sure if the paint will run but the chalk will just come off with a cloth or something. If you do do it then come down Hedge End asap as I wanna see it! lol.

    I know ...

No one can yet answer my question...

Is blackboard paint durable through the rain etc?

on his progress thread, says base coat was matt black then went over with chalk board paint?
  10. #10
Hmm. Been to b&q and been told some exterior matt black should work fine.

Just have to hope it doesnt run in the rain and go down my car

yeah black board paint is pretty durable. its normally waterproof because we made a blackboard for work and use those paint pens which we need to wash off with soapy water.

The blackboard paint stays on but it needs a touch up about every 3 months and thats with us going at it with scourers and detergent.

Try the stuff from homebase, dunno how it will look on a car though if u apply it with a brush or even a roller.

If your new bonnet it made from fibreglass it should be fine but dunno how well it would work on top of regular metallic car paint.

p.s get a few pics up of the finished job, esp if ur gona have fun with chalk lol.

Try some magnetic blackboard paint, can get it from Homebase - could turn your bonnet into a fridge door

used a base coat of Matt Black and keyed it for the blackboard paint to bond with...

    worked a treat.

as said need touching up, but nothing a bit of scotch pad and an hour of your time to roll on a new coat.
loving mine atm, but like i said to you, leave it agood 3 days before you draw on it, and make sure you have 2-3 thick coats before you draw on it in the first place!

mine needs a 4th coat, so will get some pics on my thread when i do it again next week!...
will paint your bonnet for 30 quid

EDIT : btw i got a tin of about 5Litres of Blackboard paint from Chaplins, im sure somewhere like the Early Learning Centre would sell it too.
for a bonnet, 0.25 - 0.5 litres would cover is, as it spreads a long way!
but get 1-1.5 so you can get a few coats on it!

Forget Blackboard paint, the best stuff i`ve found is Halfords high temperature engine paint in Matt Black just rub down the surface & spray on no need for primer or lacquer.Looks exactly like blackboard paint same texture as well.

Thanks for all the info. Im now just trying to source a bonnet...

yeah mate but if there chalk on it it will come off the paint will just go black n look glossy in the pain mate
  19. #19
It's better looking if it has a matt on it. I like the paint when it's not too glossy.

my mate had a rover coupe turbo black board, he didnt rub is down he just rollerd black board paint on. it lasted a good few month but he took the car off the road to put the engine into a bubble. he gave it 5 coats. it was in max power a few month ago on a page about ponty cruise.
