VTR won't rev above 3,000rpm?

Hi all, new to the site as only just bought a mk2 vtr (90bhp) but having a problem with it!

The engine management light is on and the engine will not rev above 3,000rpm, when stationary or when driving. I've plugged the car into a diagnostic machine and there is only one un-identified code coming up that will not clear. I've tried dropping the cat off and it still wont rev up so i know that's not blocked, i've also tried a new coil pack and new spark plugs.

Any help would be very much appreciated,
    Joe.

if the car is in limp mode, wont there be a good reason for this??

Surely you dont want to rev it higher if the car is protecting itself.....

Thanks very much for your replies, I will try to get the car out of limp mode tomorrow at work. Surely the fault that caused the car to go into limp mode has been resolved or is no longer present otherwise it would show on the diagnostic machine? so should be safe to run out of limp mode?

Thanks again all help is really appreciated! A nice welcome to the site.

if the car goes into limp mode some has kick it out, so it will be saved in the ecu as a fualt code!!!

so just reseting it is not a good idea!!

go to get the ecu checked!

ah i see, I'll give it a go tomorrow mate.

Just found the search function and found a few people have had a problem with the crankshaft sensor which has caused the car to do the same as mine is, and also one person has had to replace the fuel pump to resolve the problem. I'll try take it out of limp mode and see what happens, then probably try a crankshaft sensor as they control revs.
