VTR rear beam pin bearing:

  1. #1
My VTR has failed its mot on the rear pin (roller) bearings. How hard / easy are these to change? I am a pretty competent mechanic but i don’t want to get in over my neck, can you get these bearing off and the new ones in without a press or will this be easier for me to take down to the local garage?

Has anyone done this before? I don’t want to refurbish the beam because the bushes are fine and the actual beam is pretty clean.

the stub pins will be fucked, so the beam will be scrap mate. new beam or get some new pins made and pressed in yours.

Ah right, how much roughtly will new pins cost me?

We can supply new pins, citroen dont provide the new pins apart, they will want to sell you a complete beam (yellow part + pins) at 450quid + VAT + bearings.

PM piggy123 for up to date prices on the stub pins.

you'll have a hard job finding some where with a good enough press aswell. i made a set for someone on here but he had trouble finding somewhere to press them in.

Why do you guys ALWAYS say the stub pins will be knackered?

I have rebuilt many beams and in only one case have very few pins needed replacing. I'm taking like 1 in 20. Depends how bad its gotten.

in most cases the stub pins do go when the bearings go

my MOT this year came up with the same pin /bearing. In all honesty, the job was simple enough as i had access to get the pins and a press but it worked out far quicker/simpler and cheaper just to get another beam from a scrappy, condition that and whack it on.

Only cost me £50 in the end rather $$$ it could have been

because there is no inner race on the bearing the rollers act directly on the pin
so once the bearing collapses it becomes very easy to damage the pin
even a small amount of damage there will cause it to fail again as the bearing wont have a smooth surface

Any pitting or marks on the pins = nackard. I hope you've not been "repairing them" when in fact your not.

As Alex says, if you have any play 9/10 its the pins because the bearings just wear it away instantly.
