alternator belt/timing belt

hey guys, iv been having a screaching noise from the fan belt, it use to happen but no where near as loud and ofen, i was wondering whether there would be a way to tell which belt is whining either the timing or the alternator belt? iv just removed the alternator belt and theres little cracks all the way round it, the grooves have become very thin compared to my new one, and theres one little hole between the grooves hopefully this myt be the belt, if not ill need a different belt for the camshaft?? thanks alot

It sounds like a fan (auxilliary) belt to me. I wouldn't have thought you'd get screaching from the timing belt as screaching usually comes from the belt slipping on the pulley, often when it is a little loose or worn.

It seems like the belt was on the way out so worth changing it.

On a SAAB I used to own, an idler pulley on the aux belt failed. This caused a kind of screaching noise as it was failing. I doubt its the same with your situation, but might be worth keeping in mind.

    Good luck,

    Mike

timing belts dont screech but they can whine if they are too tight- but that would happen from day 1 of fitting. Did you fit the auxiliary belt tight enough? just try pinching it up a little. Also could be a pulley as mentioned above.

Also water pumps make a screeching when they fail?

Don`t rule out the alternator bearings making a screeching sound.

How did you notice that? Are you some kind of geek? lol

what where and how do i check if my timing belt is responsible for my whiring noisse, as it doesn't sound like a typical fan belt screech and my altenator belt has just been tightened(perhaps too much??)

Loosen the belt off slightly it should be roughly 5mm play when pressed in the middle between the crankshaft pulley and alternator pulley

can't u just run it for a couple of mins without the alternator belt on see if its still doing it then rule it out? sorry if thats already been said havnt read all the posts through
