C2 heads , whats the score ?

  1. #1
I keep seeing alot about c2 heads and engines but i dont really have a clue why its good and if so for what reasons i dont even know exactly whats going to need replacing either. So if someone could shed some light on all the threads i keep seeing that would be great , want to know if u swap just the complete heads or not ? cost ? clearance issues ? how powers being gained from it ? the works

    they have bigger valves.

people then use saxo springs and cams in most cases

Basically the C2/307 head (TU5JP4) has bigger inlet valves which is better for high end tuning.

The best combination is the JP4 head, the 106/Saxo (TU5J4) bottom end (as the pistons and rods are better), and the J4 camshafts, valvesprings and lifters. As the cams are a higher lift than JP4 cams, and the springs/lifters are designed for higher lift cams.

Not really worth it unless you plan on uprated cams/TBs/boost

Can pick up full JP4 engines for as little as £150, sometimes even less. Then its just a job of swapping them over, a new HG, cambelt, tensioner, Idler, water pump etc and a service and the jobs a goodun. Good excuse to fits parts along the way though like uprated cams

Yeah i plan to go down the cams route hense why i thought id look into these , so do the c2 engines drop straight into the 106/saxo? and then run cams designed for a c2 or a gti ?

Nope, you need to drill holes in the head so you can use the J4 inlet mani, swap the sump and the engine mount cradle. And then you can run C2 cams yeah but theyre all just toned down versions of the J4 ones at the same price

yeah saw about the drilling etc , would a c2 lump not just drop straight in a gti and save alot of hastle ?

Unfortunately not mate no. The tbs electronic not cable driven and the sump/exhaust mani are too deep and wouldnt match up with your exhaust

Damn that sucks , so swapping heads is the only way to go really then , whats your price on the job and how full proof is it ?

Depends on what kind of spec you want it to mate, can do everything from a simple swapping of head with a new headgasket and cambelt to replacing all seals on and in the head, fitting uprated cams along the way etc.

In terms of workmanship if the head fails in any way which could be deemed to be my fault I would cover the cost of the repairs. I doubt very much that would happen though as I take a lot of pride in doing the job properly. One thing I unfortunately cant guarantee is the solidarity of second hand parts, but the only ones to worry about really are the tappets.

I guess these are 16v heads?

At risk of sounding a n00b, do they fit on 8v bottom ends?
